Paula Poundstone: A Memory of Meeting Daddy Bush When She Didn’t Want To
Paula Poundstone leads my Friday column in the Review-Journal. But for tonight, I thought I'd share this little story she told me.
She advices you to try not to be too sanctimonious about your own politics. Her personal example: She once was hired for a White House event during the era of George H.W. Bush. At the time, she told political handlers, “I don’t want to meet Bush. Make sure there are no pictures” of her with him.
“Then I got to the hotel, and there was a message that the president was calling. I couldn’t get over there fast enough. … It was electric standing beside this guy,” she says.
Then, a Democratic political friend of hers explained: “Paula, we are ALL charming, or we wouldn’t get elected.”
She performs in Vegas this weekend. For more on that show and others by LeAnn Rimes, Motley Crue and plenty of other stage to-do's, check out my columns in the a.m. on Friday in the Review-Journal, and of course the Neon section.
