Politico: Berkley ‘wins November’

Rep. Shelley Berkley had a better month of November than Sen. Dean Heller in their march to next year's U.S. Senate election, according to an assessment Thursday in Politico, which is known for its almost micro-coverage of campaigns.

The judgment by political writer David Catanese turned on his perception that Republican Heller has stumbled.  He cited criticism by state GOP official Heidi Smith, which she later backed off, that the incumbent had slighted Northern Nevada, that botched meeting with the Latin Chamber of Commerce in Las Vegas (which was in October), and that Heller seemingly has been slow to ramp up his campaign.

The Politico scribe ranked the Nevada Senate race the fifth most-competitive in the 2012 cycle,  behind those in Virginia, Massachusetts, Montana and Missouri.
