freelance writing conference slated

Making Cent$ of a Writing Career, a Writers of Southern Nevada freelance writing conference, is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 13 at the Gold Coast, 4000 W. Flamingo Road.

Slated speakers include Steve Friess, Andrew Kiraly, Heidi Kyser, Becky A. Johnson, Steve Blust and Rick Lax. Topic discussions are to include marketing, avoiding common editing mistakes and reaching out to national markets.

UNLV Seeks Participants for Study

The UNLV Physical Therapy Department seeks women older than 50 diagnosed with osteoarthritis for a 10-week exercise study. The goal of the study is to encourage self-management of symptoms and increase knee and hip strength, range of motion and improve quality of life. Participants would undergo pre- and post-testing and attend twice weekly exercise sessions. They will receive a copy of X-rays, a body composition report, a shoe voucher, a home exercise program and a total of $50 for completing the study.

Organizers are gearing up
for Vegas Valley Book Festival

Planning is in high gear for the Vegas Valley Book Festival, scheduled Nov. 1-3. The festival is expected to feature more than 100 authors participating in panel discussions, readings, book signings, workshops and exhibitions.

Festival organizers are seeking community groups and individuals to volunteer at the festival's Nov. 3 events. To sign up as a volunteer, call Bobbie Ann Howell at 895-1878.

The festival is also soliciting nominations for the Crystal Bookmark Award, an honor bestowed on a local individual and an organization for advancing the cause of literature in the Las Vegas Valley. The submission deadline is 5 p.m. Sept. 21.

Income tax prep volunteers needed

AARP Tax-Aide NV, which prepares free personal income tax returns for residents in the lower to middle income brackets, is seeking unpaid volunteers to prepare taxes, greet clients and program computers in early 2013. Jewish Community Center
plans October trip to Los Angeles

The Jewish Community Center's Inspiring Journeys Travel Program is planning a trip to Los Angeles Oct. 12-15.

Learn about Jewish movie moguls and actors who contributed to the movie industry, and visit early sites of Jewish neighborhoods, synagogues and important community services to the Jewish people.

Also included is a guided walking tour of the Wilshire Boulevard Temple. A lunch stop will be made at the historic San Antonio Winery. The trip costs $825 for center nonmembers and $750 for members and includes three nights accommodation and bus transportation.

The Las Vegas Single Social Travel Club invites prospective members to its meetings, which are scheduled the fourth Tuesday of each month at The Tap House, 5589 W. Free ancestor search offered
at Paseo Verde Library in Henderson

The Clark County Nevada Genealogical Society in conjunction with Henderson Paseo Verde Library plans to offer a free ancestor search for any member of the general public from 1-5 p.m. Sept. 29 at 280 S. Green Valley Parkway in Henderson.

Volunteers will attempt to research a family ancestor (grandfather, grandmother, great-grandfather, etc.) to find out where they lived, who was in the family at the time, their ages, nationality, occupation and immigration information.

No reservations are required, and no guarantees can be made.
