Project Skyline, a community cleanup, planned on Diana Street

Spring cleaning is moving to the streets this weekend.

North Las Vegas officials invite residents to join Project Skyline, a community cleanup organized with the College of Southern Nevada and LUNAS Construction Clean-up, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday on Diana Street.

The city identified the block to be beautified because of many vacant or foreclosed-upon homes, said city of North Las Vegas outreach coordinator Kathi Thomas-Gibson.

Five homes are to be painted, and debris and litter are to be cleared in yards and open lots, she said.

A base camp is to be set up on the lot next to the Lions Club on Van Der Meer Street, south of Cheyenne Avenue. Registered participants are to receive a T-shirt and live entertainment, food and drinks are to be provided.

Irene Zepeda coordinates CSN Serves as an AmeriCorps representative. CSN Serves is the volunteer component of Student Life and Leadership Development, she said.

"The students wanted to get involved with some sort of beautification efforts around their campus," she said. "We're really excited and really hoping this sticks around for years to come."

The department has helped students log more than 9,200 volunteer hours since its inception three semesters ago.

CSN Serves registered 190 volunteers at press time. Zepeda said the more houses could be added to Project Skyline to keep all the volunteers busy.

Collaborations to spruce up North Las Vegas neighborhoods were prevalent before the economic downturn, Thomas-Gibson said.

"The city has been committed to working with neighborhood groups on all kinds of issues," she said. "You want to have that sense of identity and neighborhood pride, and when the community is engaged in the beautification, it helps foster a sense of pride. (They can say), 'That's my block; that's where I helped clean up my block.' "

The project needs more volunteers, and there is no minimum age to participate. Participants are to be organized into groups. City Council and state assembly members were invited to take part as well, Thomas-Gibson said.

LUNAS Construction is to provide supplies.

Future neighborhood cleanups are encouraged. Adopt-a-park and graffiti abatement are among the projects in which the city needs assistance, Thomas-Gibson said.

"If you have a concern about anything in your neighborhood, see yourself as part of the solution," Thomas-Gibson said. "We want to create a solution that embraces everyone in the community."

Registration for Saturday's event is encouraged. Business sponsors are welcomed.
