Prom picture shows students with guns, Confederate flag
A prom picture out of Colorado is causing a stir. The photo features eight high school students posed with assault rifles and a Confederate flag.
The students of Chaparral High School in Parker, Colo., haven’t done anything illegal, KDVR reported, but parents and fellow students expressed concern and anger over the portrait.
“I think in their immaturity they kind of think it is a cowboy thing, but to have parents feed into it and support it is really upsetting to me,” a mother of one of the students in the picture said.
She told KDVR her son made a mistake.
“The image is pretty disturbing, especially if they have real assault rifles in their hands,” University of Colorado-Boulder ethnic studies professor Arturo Aldama said. “Not to mention, the Confederate flag and its legacy of white supremacy, Klan violence and the Jim Crow South.”
