Put Oscar In A Clown Suit? Ideas For His Mob Museum

Review-Journal readers are chiming in on what Oscar should do with his $50 million mob museum.

In today’s RJ, I asked for suggestions on making the museum a twofer: To earn government funding, it shouldn’t just be a mob museum, it should also operate as something that directly addresses the recession perhaps.

Here’s what you’re saying so far:

Idea: Put Real Criminals In There

Mr. Elfman,

You gave me the great idea, which I am sure you thought of but did not mention, i.e., why not use part of the museum to house real, live criminals. This could solve the overcrowded jails and prisons and also be an excellent source of maintenance staffing of the building. Of course, I would suggest low risk inmates. What do you think?

Idea: Vegas It Up

Suggest the other part to be a Las Vegas Library ... or a city casino ... or a marriage license office ... Elvis Graceland West ... or ... Marilyn Monroe Movie House.

Idea: Make Oscar Hand Out Handbills There In A Clown Suit

Good morning Mr. Elfman

In your column today (Jan 13) , you asked for opinions on Oscar's pet project ......... a tribute to organized crime ala a Mob Museum in a former federal building located in Old Las Vegas .

The cost of this project seems to have escalated far beyond the original estimate of some 8 million dollars and now stands at 50 million bucks . The latter sum will buy a lot of Martini's .

I have been a student of history ever since my school days fifty years ago . I also have some knowledge of the underworld, being a former resident of Chicagoland .

I didn't like the mob 50 years ago and like it less today . It has been nothing more than a leech on society since it was first organized in large cities over a hundred years ago.

Preying on the weakness of men (and women), the underworld thrives in the arenas of thievery , prostitution , gambling , drugs and other activities that only serve to subvert the more noble aspirations of man .

To build a monument to this division of our culture is a testimony to the inanity of one man.

Somehow, the museum most likely will be built ................. even if the mob itself pays the freight .

If so, I suggest a covenant be required in that the Mayor be required to be onsite to distribute handbills for four hours a day .............. being appropriately dressed for the occasion in a clown costume complete with a bulbous red nose , oversized shoes and an outrageous wig.

Idea: Scrap It Altogether

I am sending this email for my mother. She is 86 years young, and very upset, enough to ask me to send you this email. The following are her words, as she wrote them down for me:

"Tell the Mayor to forget about a museum for the mob. The mobsters did no good, they headed nothing but crime. Good people don't want memories like that around, certainly not be be admired"!!
