Realtors donate to Haiti earthquake relief efforts

The Realtors Relief Foundation of the National Association of Realtors is contributing $550,000 to the relief of victims of the Haiti earthquake and is calling upon its 1.2 million members to help.

"Realtors help build communities and there is no better time than now to do that in Haiti," said NAR President Vicki Cox Golder, owner of Vicki L. Cox & Associates in Tucson, Ariz.

"Our thoughts and feelings go out to the people made homeless by this disaster. Realtors have a history of helping people, as we did after the 2004 tsunami struck South Asia and in 2005 when Hurricane Katrina ravaged New Orleans and the Gulf Coast."

The Foundation is donating $500,000 to the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund which is supporting earthquake recovery efforts with immediate relief and long-term support to earthquake survivors. The fund is headed by former U.S. presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush.

NAR members and others who wish to make a donation should visit realtor.org/relief and complete the contribution form.

GLVAR hosts annual Valentine's Day drive for charities

The Greater Las Vegas Association of Realtors is encouraging all local Realtors and others to join its 10th annual toiletry supply drive to benefit homeless and abused women and children at Child Haven, Safe Nest and Shade Tree Shelter.

"We've been donating personal care items to these shelters for a decade," GLVAR President Rick Shelton said. "With the tough economy, we know the need is even greater this year. So, we should do all we can to help the less fortunate, especially the women and children in need served by these charities."

Shelton said these organizations need shampoo, toilet paper, feminine products, baby wipes, diapers and similar necessities. Shelton said donations will be distributed to the shelters just in time for Valentine's Day.

Donations are being collected from now until Feb. 10 at the GLVAR office at 1750 E. Sahara Ave., just east of Maryland Parkway. The office is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

For more information, contact Nadine@glvar.org or call 784-5032.

GLVAR was founded in 1947 and provides its nearly 13,500 local members with education, training and political representation. The local representative of the National Association of Realtors, GLVAR is the largest professional organization in Southern Nevada.
