Registration is well under way for the 10th annual Tour de Summerlin, which kicks off at 7 a.m. April 30 at The Vistas Community Park, 11311 Alta Drive.
The noncompetitive cycling event features a 10-, 35- and 80-mile ride through Summerlin and Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area.
More than 500 cyclists participated in the 2010 event, making it one of the largest and most scenic cycling events in Southern Nevada. Organizers encourage pre-event registration. To preregister, visit www.tourdesummerlin.com or call 702-252-8077.
According to Randy McGhie, owner of McGhie's Ski Bike & Board and organizer of Tour de Summerlin, many valley residents enjoy Tour de Summerlin regardless of their address.
"Summerlin's abundant biking lanes, scenic views and proximity to Red Rock Canyon make it one of the best places to cycle in Las Vegas," he said.
Summerlin's dedicated bike routes and striped bike lanes are typically 4 to 6 feet in width. Bike lanes are located on main roads throughout Summerlin and are designed to accommodate competitive and recreational riders.
The community also features natural trails, are located in open space corridors, and are a preferred route for distance cyclists and runners.
"Summerlin's infrastructure promotes outdoor recreation and makes the community a natural favorite of those who enjoy an active lifestyle," said Kevin Orrock, executive vice president of master-planned communities for The Howard Hughes Corp., developer of Summerlin.
"The community is home to thousands of residents who frequent Summerlin's 150-plus miles of trails, 150 parks, dozens of dedicated athletic fields and courts, swimming pools and more. There isn't another community in Nevada with more recreational amenities than Summerlin."
Developed by The Howard Hughes Corp., Summerlin began to take shape in 1990 and has been ranked in the country's top 10 best-selling master-planned communities for nearly two decades in several national and regional studies.
Located along the western rim of the Las Vegas Valley, Summerlin encompasses 22,500 acres with about 7,500 acres still remaining to accommodate future growth within the master plan.
The community is currently home to nearly 100,000 residents.
Amenities include more than 150 neighborhood and village parks, more than 150 miles of the Summerlin trail system, 26 public and private schools, 14 houses of worship, nine golf courses, shopping centers, medical and cultural facilities, business parks and more than three dozen actively selling floor plans.
Homes are available in a variety of styles -- from single-family homes to townhomes, condominiums and lofts -- priced from the mid-$100,000s to more than $1 million.
Custom-home sites in The Ridges are priced from the $200,000s.
Luxury apartment homes offer monthly rents starting from the $800s.
