Reid on June jobless numbers : “It took many years to dig us into this hole and we’re not going to get out of it overnight”
Following the announcement that Nevada's unemployment rate for June climbed to a new record of 14.2 percent, Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., issued this statement:
"As Nevadans continue to struggle to find work, we must double our efforts to create jobs, help them stay in their homes and put the state's economy back on track. While the efforts of this Congress have kept a bad situation from becoming worse, it's important that we keep our focus on passing bills like the Small Business Jobs Bill that cuts taxes for small businesses and makes it easier for them to access the capital they need to grow and hire more workers.
"Last week, we took an important step toward ensuring the bad practices that got us into this mess are not repeated by passing the Wall Street reform bill. This legislation will hold big Wall Street banks accountable for the greed and recklessness that caused this crisis, while protecting Nevada taxpayers from ever again having to bail them out. This week, we will take another important step by passing a long-term extension of unemployment insurance to help unemployed Nevadans who are struggling to get by.
"It took many years to dig us into this hole and we're not going to get out of it overnight. It's why we passed Wall Street Reform, why we're working on the small business jobs bill and why we're going to extend unemployment insurance. We have a lot of work to do to restore Nevada's economic vitality, but Nevadans are fighters and I will continue fighting with them until every Nevadan who wants a job has one."
