Roads of wonder

One of the great pleasures of living in the West is being able to make a weekend road trip into the region's vast expanse of nothing-yet-everything.

Nevada is Ground Zero for trips that show off the majesty of unlimited horizons. Anyone who has participated in the joys of the Great Smoky Valley or the trip between Ely and Eureka knows what I'm talking about.

Over the weekend I found a good one in New Mexico and Arizona -- Highway 60 from Showlow, Ariz., to Socorro, N.M.

It's filled with absolutely gorgeous views, a jaunt over the Continental Divide, high grasslands and alpine forests. As a special bonus, you drive by the VLA -- Very Large Array -- made famous in the movie "Contact." Spectacular.
