Rory Reid keeps heat on Sandoval with first TV ad
Democrat Rory Reid continues to use his stance on education to put pressure on Republican Brian Sandoval in the campaign for governor.
Reid launched his first television ad of the campaign Wednesday and used it to highlight his efforts to make education in Nevada -- or lack thereof -- the number one issue in the race.
The ad features a series of children in a school setting describing how viewers should think about their vote for governor.
Here's the script:
Kids:
When we choose our next governor, we should remember to ask:
Do they have the highest ethical standards?
Do they always put Nevada first?
We should remember to ask.
Do they follow their own instincts?
Do they understand that a stronger economy depends on stronger schools?
And do they have a plan to totally transform our schools?
Reid:
My plans as governor are all about them. And when it comes to their education - I’ll never, ever compromise.
Sandoval, a former federal judge, is leading Reid by double-digits in statewide opinion polls and Reid, who has raised more campaign contributions, is countering by highlighting the education issue. Reid sees it as an advantage because he has already published his reform plan for education and until Sandoval has a plan of his own he can be painted as dodging the issue.
Reid's campaign is also using statements from an earlier Sandoval plan to balance the budget to infer Sandoval would lay off thousands of teachers.
Reid, the son of U.S. Senate majority leader Harry reid, D-Nev., who is in a tough re-election campaign of his own, is also downplaying his family ties.
The new ad doesn't mention his last name.
