Sandoval’s Spanish-language ad stirs debate on Facebook
Nevada Republican gubernatorial candidate Brian Sandoval's new Spanish-language television ad livened up the candidate's Facebook page with a debate between supporters -- and former supporters.
Sandoval, a former federal judge and Nevada's first Hispanic attorney general, launched the television ad on Sunday during the World Cup championship match.
By then the debate on his Facebook page between people who liked the ad and those who felt it suggested tolerance for illegal immigrants had been bubbling for two days.
So far the ad, posted on Facebook at 1:44 p.m. with a follow-up post at 1:55 p.m. Friday, has generated 95 comments between the two posts, more than posts on any other issue on the page since it launched Oct. 14.
While some of the comments reflect multiple posts by the same people, the high level of activity suggests the issue of immigration and Hispanic -- or Anglo -- identity is a provocative one among the Facebook crowd.
"Sounds like Brian is trying to appeal to illegal aliens. Ya know the ones who wouldn't understand an Ad in English... You just lost my vote," said a commenter identified as Debra Grutzius posted Friday at 2:07 p.m.
Two minutes later a commenter identified as Corey McGregor shot back: "Are you serious? There are many people backing him that don't speak English. If it was you in that situation you would be singing another tune. Get over it! Not everything is going to be catered to you're specifications!"
