Southern Highlands raises spirits, funds for Operation Warm Heart

Over 3,500 residents of Southern Highlands and their guests gathered in Stonewater Park for the annual Memorial Day celebration, May 26.

During the event, residents and guests purchased $15,000 worth of raffle tickets and food coupons to benefit the Nellis Air Force Base charity, Operation Warm Heart.

Operation Warm Heart was created to assist Air Force members and their families with immediate financial support when other resources are not available.

Through the efforts of the Combined Federal Campaign and other major sponsors, funds are raised to support those who serve our country. Funds are distributed to the families of service personnel who have been specifically identified by their First Sergeants as being in need of financial assistance.

Once awarded, the funding may be used for housing, food, medical expenses and other necessities.

The fundraising Memorial Day event began with the Nellis Honor Guard presenting the colors and the Las Vegas Tenors leading the crowd in the National Anthem.

The evening also included water park festivities for kids, a barbeque dinner, the patriotic sounds of the University of Nevada Las Vegas Community Concert Band and a fireworks extravaganza.

Sponsored by Southern Highlands Community Association, Southern Highlands Development Corp., the Builders of Southern Highlands and Southern Highlands Realty, the annual celebration is free to Southern Highlands residents.

To visit Southern Highlands, take Interstate 15 south and exit Blue Diamond Road to Decatur, take a left turn leading directly to Southern Highlands Parkway.
