ORGANIZATIONS PLAN FOOD AND CLOTHING DRIVE FOR AT-RISK TEENS

Commercial real estate development association NAIOP Southern Nevada and STREET Teens, an organization helping homeless and at-risk teens in Las Vegas, are planning a food and clothing drive.

NAIOP will be collecting items needed for homeless teenagers at its next monthly breakfast meeting, set for 7 to 8:30 a.m. Thursday at The Orleans, 4500 W. Tropicana Ave.

Items can also be dropped off through 5 p.m. Wednesday at the NAIOP office, 1880 E. Warm Springs Road, Suite 100.

All items collected are to benefit STREET Teens’ clients. STREET Teens is a nonprofit organization that takes time, resources, commitment and a personalized step-by-step approach to help move teenagers off the streets. The organization is requesting the following items: toothpaste, deodorant (men and women), lotion, disposable razors, paper towels, shampoo and conditioner (regular size), toothbrushes, canned pasta, bottled water, sandwich size zip-lock bags, hotel-sized body wash, plastic bar soap containers, tin foil, paper plates, large black trash bags, laundry detergent and shaving cream.

NEVADA PUBLIC RADIO TO HOST
FREE RECYCLING EVENT

Nevada Public Radio is set to hold a free recycling event from 8 a.m. to noon April 27 at The Donald W. Reynolds Broadcast Center at the College of Southern Nevada, 1289 S. Torrey Pines Drive.

Multiple organizations that specialize in or benefit from recycling are set to be at the event sponsored by Subaru of Las Vegas.

Participating organizations and services available are:

Shred-it: paper shredding, document destruction and computer hard drive destruction for working and non-working hard drives. Hard drives must be removed from the computer before they will be crushed, and the crushed hard drive remains will be recycled.

Blind Center of Nevada: recycling or repurposing electronics such as computers (including data erasing,) printers, appliances, mobile phones, etc.

Republic Services: recycling of commingled household and business recyclables such as plastic bottles, metals including steel and aluminum cans, cardboard, magazines, newspapers, junk mail, phone books, paper bags and glass (separation of materials is not required).

RED ROCK ROTARY CLUB PLANS PHOTOGRAPHER FUNDRAISER APRIL 30

The Red Rock Rotary Club and AR Creative Photography plan to host a Strike a Pose fundraiser from 6 to 9 p.m. April 30 at O’Aces Bar & Grill, 9050 W. Post Road.

The event will feature professional head shots for $10 in advance or $15 at the event. Also expect networking opportunities, raffle prizes, free appetizers and a cash bar.

THEATER ANNOUNCES CLASSES FOR YOUTHS

The nonprofit and nonprofessional Las Vegas Little Theatre has announced its LVLT Summer Youth Theatre Academy. Weekly classes for students ages 7 to 13 are set to start in June. Students may register for one or more sessions to gain hands-on experience in one or more facets of theater and acting. Each week is to end with a performance by the students in the LVLT Black Box theater.

Classes are set from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday on the following topics:

n June 17-21: Improvisation: Whose Line Is It Anyway?

n June 24-28: Theater 101: There is No Business like Show Business!

n July 8-12: Musical Theater: Triple Threat Theater

n July 15-19: Comedy: Make ’Em Laugh

n July 22-26: Drama: Why the Long Face?

n July 29-Aug. 2: Mystery: Who Done It?

n An Audition Workshop is planned for July 1-3 and is open to students ages 7 to 18.

The LVLT Summer Youth Academy is conducted by Emily Fagan, a certified speech, theater and English teacher. Classes are $250 per week for each student; three weeks are $350; and all six weeks (excludes audition workshop) are $1,300. The three-day workshop is $150 per student.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR CLEANUP
OF west flamingo PARK

Real estate professionals from the Commercial Alliance Las Vegas are seeking volunteers to help them clean up trash and graffiti at 10 a.m. Saturday in West Flamingo Park, on Flamingo Road west of Jones Boulevard and east of Guinn Middle School.

With help, paint and supplies from Clark County, CALV volunteers and their families will clean and paint over graffiti in this park as part of their continued commitment to maintaining local neighborhoods and improving the quality of life in Southern Nevada.

TRAVEL CLUB TO MEET AT TAP HOUSE

The Las Vegas Single Social Travel Club for Mature Adults invites prospective members to its meetings, which are scheduled for 7 p.m. the fourth Tuesday of the month at The Tap House, 5589 W. Charleston Blvd.

The meet-and-greet portion is set to start at 6:30 p.m. in the meeting room. Discussions focus on day trips, local events, in-state and out-of-state traveling, cruises and international traveling. FAMILY PROMISE TO HOST CARDBOARD CITY FUNDRAISER

Family Promise of Las Vegas plans to host its Cardboard City fundraiser at 6 p.m. Saturday at St. Thomas More, 130 N. Pecos Road.

Each team or individual is asked to raise at least $100 in order to take part in the event where participants spend the night in cardboard homes.

The goal is to raise $30,000 and to have at least 300 people attend the sleep over.

BLM PLANS OUTDOOR OPPORTUNITY
OPEN HOUSE

The Bureau of Land Management Red Rock/Sloan Field Office has scheduled an open house from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday at the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area Visitor Center classroom, 1000 Scenic Loop Drive.

It will highlight recreation opportunities on public land and will focus on full-time commercial outfitters and guides at Red Rock Canyon.

Off-road, hiking, biking, climbing and horseback tour companies will be at the open house, and several will have tours starting from the Visitor Center or a nearby designated area. Some will offer discounts for future expeditions.

Participating companies include Bobcat Tours, Escape Adventures, McGhie’s Bike Outpost, Cowboy Trail Rides and Red Rock Riding Stables, Jackson Hole Mountain Guides and American Alpine Institute.

DJS FOR PJS TO HOST 11TH ANNUAL
PAJAMA DRIVE APRIL 26

The 11th annual DJS for PJS event is scheduled for 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. April 26. The daylong event is designed to collect new pajamas for children in crisis and benefits charities throughout the Las Vegas Valley.

Local disc jockeys will encourage corporate and individual donations by broadcasting on-site from four Kohl’s stores: in the Summerlin area at 8671 W. Charleston Blvd.; in Centennial Hills at 6700 N. Durango Drive; in southwest Las Vegas at 4250 Blue Diamond Road; and in Henderson at 30 N. Valle Verde Drive.

The aim is to collect 8,000 pairs of pajamas to be distributed by local charities, including A Brighter Day Family Services, Baby’s Bounty, Boys Town Nevada, Casa de Luz (House of Light), Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada, Child Haven, Neighborhood Family Services, Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation, Nevada Children’s Center, Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth, Ronald McDonald House, S.A.F.E. House, Safe Nest, St. Jude’s Ranch, Southern Nevada Children First, the Shade Tree, Variety Early Learning Center and Women’s Development Center.

Each year, Vons dedicates April to its Support for People with Disabilities fundraising campaign to benefit Easter Seals, the Special Olympics and an array of organizations that help people with disabilities live fuller, more independent lives.

Through April 30, all Las Vegas Valley Vons stores will accept donations at the checkouts to benefit Easter Seals Nevada. Ninety cents of each dollar raised will directly support individuals served by the organization.

Vons has raised and donated more than $130 million to support organizations such as Easter Seals, the Special Olympics and a range of other organizations that assist people with special needs.

Easter Seals Nevada is one of Nevada’s largest community disability agencies, serving more than 7,000 people with disabilities and their families each year.

NEVADA’S BIG GIVE TO PUSH ONLINE GIVING APRIL 25

The second statewide online giving initiative, Nevada’s Big Give, is scheduled for April 25, and Nevada’s Big Give is encouraging local charities to sign up online. The giving day initiative is open to all state nonprofit organizations to participate.

Nevada’s Big Give is a day of online giving that benefits charities across the state. This initiative, launched by NevadaGIVES, is designed to bring new donors and dollars to nonprofit organizations in Nevada.

To sign up, charities can visit nvbiggive.org by Monday and follow the instructions to register and create a homepage on the site. Charities that participated last year are automatically signed up.

Nevada’s Big Give urges participating nonprofits to encourage their supporters to donate on the giving day. To further help meet charities’ fundraising goals, Nevada’s Big Give will hold professional development workshops for nonprofits.

Established in 2003, NevadaGIVES is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization whose mission is to increase awareness of philanthropy so more people give back in a way that is meaningful to them.

ART CONTEST TO TAKE SUBMISSIONS

Each year the city of Las Vegas Arts Commission and the city of Las Vegas sponsor the Celebrating Life! fine arts competition for artists 50 or older in Clark, Esmeralda, Lincoln, Mineral and Nye counties. Entries for the 13th annual juried event are being accepted from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 23-24 at the Charleston Heights Arts Center, 800 S. Brush St. There is no fee to enter.

Artists may enter original works in the following fine art media categories: drawing and pastel, mixed media, painting, sculpture and ceramics, watercolor and gouache; and photography.

Only one work per artist may be submitted.

A public reception and awards ceremony is scheduled from 6 to 7:30 p.m. May 24 at the Charleston Heights Arts Center. The exhibition is slated be displayed there May 24-July 13.

CAMP SOLARI TO OFFER
FREE BEREAVEMENT CAMP

Camp Solari, a weekend-long bereavement camp sponsored by the Solari Hospice Foundation, 5550 S. Jones Blvd., plans to offer children ages 6 to 17 and their surviving caregivers a free opportunity to learn healthy coping strategies and honor the memories of their loved ones. The next camp is scheduled for May 3-5 at the Mt. Charleston Lodge at the end of state Route 157. Applications for Camp Solari must be completed by March 11 to be considered for the spring camp. Planned activities include art, music, talk therapy, drumming, dancing and nature walks.

The hospice also offers free weekly bereavement support groups from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays.

WOMEN’S CLUB OF SUMMERLIN TAKING APPLICATIONS FOR DARE TO DREAM GRANTS

The Women’s Club of Summerlin is taking applications through May 16 for its Dare To Dream grant program. Grants of up to $3,000 are offered to women who need assistance with educational opportunities, learning new skills or endeavouring to improve their lives in a responsible manner. Nonprofit It’s All About Kidz launched a sponsorship campaign calling for any company, organization or individual to sponsor a mother and child who is enrolled in the sober living program. The southwest-area group focuses on providing a sober living environment to women and their children while providing services for them to become self-sufficient. The nonprofit also serves as a foster care agency to provide temporary living arrangements for children.
