NOMINATIONS SOUGHT FOR SENIOR CITIZEN OF THE YEAR
Nominations are being sought for Nevada’s Senior Citizen of the Year. Anyone 60 or older who has lived in Nevada for at least five years is eligible to be nominated.
The National Silver Haired Congress Nevada Delegation, in partnership with the Aging Services Directors Organization, established the award in 2013. Las Vegas resident Raymonde Fiol, 77, was the 2014 recipient.
The deadline for nominations is March 31. Guidelines and nomination forms are available at nevshc.org or by calling 702-860-6349. The award will be presented in May.
MOJAVE MAX WATCH UNDERWAY AT RED ROCK CANYON
Although Mojave Max is still in brumation, the public is welcome to visit the desert tortoise in his habitat at the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area Visitor Center and join the Mojave Max watch between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. daily. A special display has been set up where everyone can participate in predicting the time and date when Mojave Max will emerge from his burrow.
Clark County and partners host the annual Mojave Max Emergence Contest, education programs and school assemblies in support of Mojave Desert environmental education. As part of the contest, students are encouraged to guess when Mojave Max will first exit his burrow each year. To enter the contest, visit mojavemax.com and click on “Emergence Contest.”
SPRING MOUNTAIN RANCH STATE PARK NEEDS DOCENTS
The Spring Mountain Ranch State Park Docent Organization plans to start its next volunteering training class March 7. The nonprofit volunteer group is dedicated totally to the park at 6375 state Route 159 and works closely with the rangers. Docents greet visitors, give indoor and outdoor tours and interpret the historical, cultural and natural history of the ranch.
Docent classes are set for Saturdays March 7-April 25.

WOMEN’S CLUB OF SUMMERLIN DONATES FUNDS TO PROJECT 150
The Women’s Club of Summerlin recently presented a check to Project 150 at the club’s annual installation luncheon at Canyon Gate Country Club.
Nonprofit Project 150 strives to fill basic needs for homeless, displaced and disadvantaged high school students in the Las Vegas Valley. The Women’s Club of Summerlin raised more than $15,500 for the effort at its 19th annual charity event held in October.

GOODWILL RECEIVES GRANT FOR VETERANS JOB PLACEMENT PROGRAM
Goodwill of Southern Nevada recently received a $200,000 Neighborhood Builders grant from Bank of America Charitable Foundation to help with job placement for local veterans and their immediate family members. The grant is expected to assist approximately 225 veterans and/or family members in finding work in Southern Nevada over a two-year period.

IMPACT LAS VEGAS NONPROFIT PLANS 2015 AWARD
Impact Las Vegas, a nonprofit women’s giving circle in its second year, plans to award an $18,000 grant to a Southern Nevada nonprofit in June.
Impact Las Vegas has a two-step grant application process, with a Feb. 13 deadline for the Letter of Inquiry form submission. For more information, visit the grant page of impact-lv.org to review the grant process guidelines and eligibility requirements.
Members of Impact Las Vegas each donate $1,000 by Dec. 31, with 100 percent of the donations pooled for an annual grant to a Southern Nevada nonprofit in one of five focus areas: culture, education, environment, family, or health and wellness.
GENEALOGY GROUP PLANS FEB. 15 PROGRAM
The Jewish Genealogy Society of Southern Nevada plans to meet at 1 p.m. Feb. 15 at the Sahara West Library, 9600 W. Sahara Ave.
The topic will be “Who do you think you are?” Dr. Stephen Morse, creator of the One-Step website, is set to speak. The site began as an aid for finding passengers in the Ellis Island database and has evolved to include about 200 web-based tools.
The meeting is also set to include the topic “Genealogy Beyond the Y Chromosome: Autosomes Exposed.”
The Jewish Genealogy Society of Southern Nevada meets at 1 p.m. on the third Sunday of each month. Meetings are open to the public, and membership applications are available at the meetings. Annual dues are $18 for individuals and $25 for a family membership.

CONTEMPORARY ARTS CENTER SEEKS SHOW ENTRIES
The Contemporary Arts Center is accepting entries for its 26th Annual Juried Show, an exhibit of contemporary visual artists. The deadline is Feb. 18 for artists 16 or older, who may submit a maximum of five works completed within the last two years and not exhibited in a previous CAC exhibition.
More than $2,000 will be awarded to the artists selected for the exhibit as judged by the jurors. All selected works must be delivered ready to hang/display and received by the CAC by March 28.

VIDEO GAME DESIGN CLASSES SET AT LIBRARIES
TechBrainiacs plans to offer introductory video game design classes children 9 to 15 at multiple Las Vegas-Clark County Library District branches.

JCC WEST TO HOST MONTHLY MOMMY & ME CLASSES
The Jewish Community Center of Southern Nevada plans to offer Mommy & Me with a Jewish Twist for mothers and their newborns through 3-year-olds. The monthly classes are scheduled for 9 to 10 a.m. March 6, April 12 and May 3 at the JCC West, 1400 N. Rampart Blvd., Suite 105, inside Las Vegas Sports Park.
The holiday-themed classes will build socialization skills, increase confidence and enhance early learning.
