Summerlin celebrates the season with holiday-themed activities
When it comes to celebrating the season, there are holiday happenings in the master-planned community of Summerlin. Concerts, seasonal productions and holiday-themed celebrations fill the December calendar at the community's schools, houses of worship and cultural centers.
"December is a particularly fun month in Summerlin," said Kevin Orrock, president of the master-planned community.
"Summerlin will host more seasonal celebrations than any other community in Las Vegas -- that's just one of many perks to living in a well-established, heavily programmed master-planned environment."
Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts Las Vegas is hosting a gingerbread demonstration today from 10 a.m. to noon at the Summerlin-based culinary school, 1451 Center Crossing Road. Participants are encouraged to pre-register by calling 365-7690.
The Sun City Summerlin Musicmakers Chorale will present Come Join the Holiday Season tonight at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Starbrigtht Theatre. The 40-member chorus will sing holiday songs featuring percussion, woodwind instruments and dancers. Tickets are $8 and can be purchased by calling 243-2953 or 255-0972.
Throughout the month of December, the Summerlin Library and Performing Arts Center is hosting a variety of seasonally themed productions including IDEA Youth Company's Holiday Showcase today, Christmas Wizard of Oz presented by Creativarts Dec. 14, the Annual Christmas Show presented by the Las Vegas Gamble Aires Dec. 18 and The Nutcracker presented by The Las Vegas Ballet Company Dec. 20-23.
In addition, the library is hosting a series of winter holiday craft programs for youths as old as 11-years-old. Call 240-3262 for additional information on holiday programs and activities at the Summerlin Library and Performing Arts Center.

Summerlin schools are celebrating the season and showcasing student talents at school concerts. Becker Middle School's Choir Holiday Concert is Dec. 15 at 6 p.m. and the Guitar Holiday Concert is Dec. 16 at 6 p.m. For more information on Becker's concerts, call 799-4460.
Adult Summerlin residents can celebrate the holidays at Red Rock Mingle at the Lobby Bar at Red Rock Casino Resort Spa every Friday night from 5 to 8 p.m. throughout the month of December. The event includes complimentary appetizers, tastings and raffles.
"There truly is something for everyone in Summerlin, regardless of your age or interests," Orrock said. "We invite everyone to experience the joy of the season in Summerlin at one of more of our holiday events."
Developed by The Howard Hughes Corp., Summerlin is celebrating its 20th anniversary with a year-long celebration that commenced in May 2010.
The community is currently home to nearly 100,000 residents with access to amenities including more than 150 neighborhood and village parks, more than 150 completed miles of the Summerlin trail system, nine golf courses, a dozen houses of worship, shopping centers, medical and cultural facilities, business parks, 25 public and private schools and 75 selling floor plans.
