Summerlin fire station gets building trade publication acknowledgement

Las Vegas Fire & Rescue Station No. 47 in Summerlin has been named the best public project under $10 million by Southwest Contractor, a construction trade magazine.

Located at 911 Ridge Pine St., the station opened in May 2007 as the first Summerlin fire station west of Interstate 215, the Las Vegas Beltway.

According to Kevin Orrock, top division executive of The Howard Hughes Corp., developer of Summerlin, Station No. 47 was a joint project of Hughes and the city of Las Vegas.

The 11,300-square-foot, three-bay station was built on land donated by The Howard Hughes Corp. to the city of Las Vegas. Hughes also funded the design and construction at a total value of more than $4.6 million.

Las Vegas Fire & Rescue Station No. 47 houses a dormitory, kitchen, training room and gym. The facility houses three paramedic crews, three captains, three engineers, three firefighters and one engine.

"As Summerlin has grown, the community's need for fire protection and emergency services has also increased," Orrock said.

"That's why The Howard Hughes Corp. believes in taking an active role in the development of critical fire and emergency protection facilities. These are essential components of any community and it's important to us to ensure the basic infrastructure of the community is in place. It's a part of the development process and it's just one way we ensure the vibrancy and health of our community."

In fact, The Howard Hughes Corp., which is an affiliate of General Growth Properties Inc., donated the land and funded the building expenses of Summerlin's other two fire stations: Clark County Fire Station No. 28, located at 10820 West Sahara Ave., and city of Las Vegas Fire Station No. 7, located at 10101 W. Banburry Cross Drive.

In total, the company has donated more than $20 million to date in land and building costs to provide adequate fire protection and emergency response services for the growing Summerlin community.

The 22,500-acre master-planned community began to take shape in 1990 and is located along the western rim of the Las Vegas Valley.

The community features amenities and is currently home to more than 95,000 residents.

With about 7,500 acres still to develop, including its urban core, Summerlin Centre, Summerlin is continuing to unfold.

Summerlin is home to more than 100 neighborhood and village parks, more than 150 completed miles of the Summerlin trail system, nine golf courses, a dozen houses of worship, shopping centers, medical and cultural facilities, business parks, 22 public and private schools and more than 100 actively selling floor plans.

Homes are available in a variety of styles -- from single-family homes to townhomes, condominiums and lofts -- priced from the upper $200,000s to more than $2 million.

Custom home sites in The Ridges are priced from the $500,000s.

Luxury apartment homes offer monthly rents starting from the $900s.
