Summerlin kicks off Adventure Days with Tour de Summerlin
Summerlin will host Adventure Days to highlight its healthy outdoor lifestyle. The six-week promotion features events open to the general public.
Major events include Tour de Summerlin, a noncompetitive cycling ride April 24; a desert cleanup event along the western edge of development in Summerlin May 1; and Mad Mud Run, a boot-camp style run that concludes in a mud pit May 22.
"The outdoor events planned as part of this year's Adventure Days promotion focus on outdoor recreation and environmental stewardship -- two things we're very passionate about here in Summerlin," said Tom Warden, senior vice president of community and government relations for The Howard Hughes Corp., developer of Summerlin. "We encourage valley residents to experience first-hand the vibrant quality of life, abundant amenities and environmental awareness available here in Summerlin by participating in one, or all of these events."
The noncompetitive cycling ride, Tour de Summerlin, kicks off Adventure Days April 24 at The Vistas Community Park, 11311 Alta Drive. The ninth annual event features a 10-, 35- and 80-mile ride through Summerlin and Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. More than 500 cyclists participated in the 2009 event, making it one of the largest in Southern Nevada. Pre-event registration is online at tourdesummerlin.com or by calling 252-8077. Tour de Summerlin is organized by McGhie's Ski Bike and Board and is sponsored by Summerlin.
The desert cleanup event May 1 is slated for undeveloped areas in Summerlin West, along the western edge of The Vistas village. Valley residents interested in participating in this event should meet at the western end of Far Hills Avenue near Desert Foothills Drive, west of Interstate 215, the Las Vegas Beltway, at 8 a.m. Volunteers are encouraged to wear closed-toe shoes sunscreen and a hat.
The Howard Hughes Corp. is working with the Southern Nevada Health District to help eradicate illegal dumping in Summerlin. Residents are encouraged to report dumpers by calling 759-0600. The day, time and license plate number is required to report an incident, and a photograph helps but is not necessary. For more information, visit summerlin.com/cleanup.
The second annual Mad Mud Run is May 22, also at The Vistas Community Park. The 4-mile course features a variety of boot camp-style obstacles including a low wall, hurdles and hay bale obstacle. The event concludes with a run through a 40-foot long mud pit. Additional information is available at madmudrun.com.
