Summerlin Mad Mud Run debuts today
One way to celebrate the Memorial Day weekend is by climbing cargo nets, running through hay bale obstacles and crawling through a 40-foot- long mud pit at the inaugural Summerlin Mad Mud Run today at The Vistas Community Park, 11311 Alta Drive. Summerlin Mad Mud Run is about a 4-mile run that features boot-camp style obstacles. Awards will be presented to the top finishes in the individual and team divisions as well as the best crowd pleasing costume. The run begins at 8 a.m. Registration is $60.
Youth ages 4 to 12 are invited to participate in the 100-meter Mudpuppy Splash, a mini-version of the Mad Mud Run starting at 9:30 a.m. The Mudpuppy Splash is limited to the first 200 kids. Registration is $15.
According to Rick Eastman, race director for Sierra Adventure Sports and coordinator of the Mad Mud Run, there has never been a run like this in Nevada. "It's a unique run with a dramatic ending," he said. "People will be talking about it for weeks."
A portion of the proceeds from the event will benefit Safe Nest, a local nonprofit agency established in 1977 that runs the only 24-hour emergency shelters in Las Vegas that operate with undisclosed locations for the safety of battered women and children.
Mad Mud Run is one of multiple events coordinated in conjunction with Summerlin's Adventure Day's campaign.
The next event, Happy Trails Family Fun Run/Walk, will be held on National Trails Day, June 6. The event includes a 1.6-mile family fun walk from Tree Top Park to The Arbors Tennis & Play Park; and a 9-mile fun run from The Trails Park to The Mesa Park coordinated by the Summerlin Striders, a Summerlin-based running club. Summerlin launched the Adventure Day campaign in April with the eighth annual Tour de Summerlin event. The campaign is designed to show Summerlin's active lifestyle while highlighting the community's award-winning amenities.
Developed by The Howard Hughes Corp., an affiliate of General Growth Properties Inc., Summerlin began to take shape in 1990.
The community is currently home to more than 95,000 residents who enjoy a variety of amenities. These include more than 100 neighborhood and village parks, more than 150 completed miles of the Summerlin trail system, nine golf courses, a dozen houses of worship, shopping centers, medical and cultural facilities, business parks, 23 public and private schools and nearly 100 actively selling floor plans.
Homes are available in a variety of styles -- from single-family homes to townhomes, condominiums and lofts -- priced from the upper $100,000s to more than $2 million. Custom home sites in The Ridges are priced from the $500,000s.
