Summerlin residents support their own backyard: Red Rock Canyon

A dozen Summerlin families have become charter members of Summerlin Friends of Red Rock Canyon.

"We landed in Las Vegas from the East Coast and all roads led to Summerlin," said Howard Steiner of the family's move to the community four years ago. "We haven't looked back and are enjoying time with our boys and each other. We especially appreciate the outdoor and recreational opportunities Summerlin provides, including proximity to Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. It's a side of Las Vegas most outsiders aren't aware of, but it's a place that we all fell in love with."

According to Susan Steiner, whose sons, Kyle and Brad, attend Palo Verde High School and Sig Rogich Middle School, respectively, the family is enjoying exploring the "natural" side of the community.

The Howard Hughes Corp., developer of Summerlin, and Friends of Red Rock Canyon, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation and protection of Red Rock Canyon, recently united to encourage Summerlin residents to join the organization via a campaign called Summerlin Friends of Red Rock Canyon.

According to Tom Warden, vice president of community and government affairs for Hughes, the campaign culminated Oct. 6 with a special chuck wagon breakfast and early morning hike.

"Our goal was to unite environmentally conscious Summerlin residents with an already well established organization that is doing much to preserve the Red Rock region," Warden said. "Summerlin residents not only appreciate the beauty of the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area that frames the community's western edge, they consider the area an extension of their own backyard."

Summerlin residents who joined Friends of Red Rock Canyon via a $250 pledge received all the standard benefits of membership with the organization, along with a few special perks funded by Hughes, including Summerlin Friends of Red Rock T-shirts and window stickers. They also enjoyed the opportunity to attend the chuck wagon breakfast and early morning hike led by Athena Sparks of the Red Rock Canyon Interpretive Society.

"We are lucky to have The Howard Hughes Corp. as a dedicated partner in our preservation and educational efforts for Red Rock Canyon. They've always done the right thing for Red Rock and more importantly, for all Southern Nevadans to ensure that we will all enjoy this area for generations to come," said Pat Williams, president of Friends of Red Rock Canyon.

Since its inception in 1984, Friends of Red Rock Canyon has provided more than 500,000 volunteer hours and more than $1 million in financial support for the preservation and protection of Red Rock Canyon, according to Williams.

"We hope to build on this year after year," said Warden of the first-year campaign. "It's the right thing to do for those who care about Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. The Howard Hughes Corp. is proud to be part of this effort."

Summerlin residents interested in joining Summerlin Friends of Red Rock Canyon can call Vicki Sudduth at 515-5360.

Summerlin began to take shape in 1990. It is a 22,500-acre master planned community located along the western rim of the Las Vegas valley.

The community features a number of amenities and is currently home to more than 95,000 residents. With about 7,500 acres to develop, including its urban core, Summerlin Centre, the community is continuing to unfold.

It is home to more than 100 neighborhood and village parks, more than 150 completed miles of the Summerlin trail system, houses of worship, shopping centers, medical and cultural facilities, business parks and more than 100 actively selling floor plans.

Homes are available in a variety of styles -- from single-family homes to townhomes, condominiums and lofts -- priced from the high $200,000s to more than $2 million. Custom home sites in The Ridges are priced from the $500,000s. Apartment homes offer monthly rents starting from the upper $800s.
