Summerlin Strawberry Festival characterized as a ‘berry’ fun event

Hundreds of valley residents attended the inaugural Summerlin Strawberry Festival on May 15 at The Gardens Park in the master-planned community of Summerlin.

The event was hosted by the Las Vegas Farmers Market, LLC and The Summerlin Council, the non-profit arm of the Summerlin Community Association dedicated to the social, recreational, cultural and educational enrichment of residents and co-sponsor of the community's weekly farmers' market.

Nine-year-old Devan Mosses placed first in the strawberry race; 7-year-old Tiffany Yugo won the strawberry shortcake- eating competition; and Lucy Rainey won the best strawberry recipe competition for her fresh cream strawberry cake entry. These were three events that headlined this first-ever Summerlin Strawberry Festival.

"The entire event was planned as a celebration of all things strawberry," said Steve Johnson, event coordinator for the Las Vegas Farmers Market LLC, who oversees the market in partnership with The Summerlin Council. "It was a fun event and a new twist on the farmers market. We're pleased with the tremendous support we received from our vendors and the hundreds of residents who enjoyed the festivities."

The Las Vegas Farmers Market brings fresh produce and homemade products from vendors throughout the Western United States to The Gardens Park every Tuesday. Regularly featured items include fresh fruits, vegetables, soaps, lotions and other beauty products in addition to a variety of crafts -- from candles and scrapbooks to hand-crafted jewelry.
