Summerlin tennis team wins state championship

The girls' varsity tennis team from Bishop Gorman High School in Summerlin took home the state championship title Oct. 19 after a grueling match against Coronado High School that ended with a 10-8 victory for the Gaels.

During the past decade, the team, which is coached by Gordon Hammond, who also serves as the director of the Summerlin Tennis Club, has taken home the state title seven times.

According to Dr. Peter Weinburgh, athletic director for Bishop Gorman High School, there is a great spirit and energy when it comes to the school's various athletic programs.

"Our students are proud to be Gaels and it shows," he said. "Our teams compete with skill and determination; our coaches instruct with passion; and our supporters cheer with enthusiasm."

Bishop Gorman High School opened its $93 million Summerlin campus on Sept. 5 to more than 1,000 students throughout the Las Vegas Valley.

The 187,000-square-foot-school is located on 36 acres in The Mesa Village at Hualapai Way and Russell Road near Interstate 215, the Las Vegas Beltway. The campus houses a 5,500-square-foot alumni memorial chapel; biology, chemistry and physics labs; learning centers; a college-style lecture hall; a performing arts theatre; and five athletic fields, tennis courts and two gymnasiums.

The school is one of 22 public and private schools located in the community.

"Both our private and public schools have earned significant honors for both academics and athletics, and we're proud to claim them all," said Tom Warden, vice president of community and government relations for The Howard Hughes Corp., developer of Summerlin.

The 22,500-acre master-planned community began to take shape in 1990 and is located along the western rim of the Las Vegas Valley.

The community features a number of amenities and is home to more than 95,000 residents.

With about 7,500 acres still to develop, including its urban core, Summerlin Centre, Summerlin is continuing to unfold.

Summerlin is home to more than 100 neighborhood and village parks, more than 150 completed miles of the Summerlin trail system, nine golf courses, a dozen houses of worship, shopping centers, medical and cultural facilities, business parks, 22 public and private schools and more than 100 actively selling floor plans.

Homes are available in a variety of styles -- from single-family homes to townhomes, condominiums and lofts -- priced from the low $200,000s to more than $2 million.

Custom home sites in The Ridges are priced from the $500,000s.
