WARD 2 COUNCILMAN BEERS TO HOST
MEET-AND-GREET EVENT MAY 14

Las Vegas Ward 2 City Councilman Bob Beers invites adult residents to join him for a meet and greet from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. May 14 at Angel Park Golf Course’s clubhouse restaurant, 100 S. Rampart Blvd.

Beers also invites residents to join him for coffee and conversation from 8 to 9:30 a.m. May 31 at the same location.

Take advantage of the opportunity to talk with him about Ward 2, the city of Las Vegas and express concerns.

FREE MEDICARE COUNSELING PLANNED
MAY 15 AT H2U MOUNTAINVIEW OFFICE

Free Medicare counseling is planned from 9:15 to 11:15 a.m. May 15 at the H2U MountainView Office, 3150 N. Tenaya Way, Suite 114.

A State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) volunteer counselor will answer questions about Medicare issues, benefits and Medicare Part D. For information on Medicare Part D, bring a list of all medications, their doses and how often they’re taken.

FALLEN HEROES 5K RUN/WALK SET
FOR MAY 18 AT BRUCE TRENT PARK

The Douglas J. Green Memorial Foundation Fallen Heroes 5K Run/Walk is scheduled for 8 a.m. May 18 at Bruce Trent Park, 1600 N. Rampart Blvd. at Vegas Drive.

May 18 is Armed Forces Day. The 5K will honor service members with ties to Nevada who have died.

SAHARA WEST LIBRARY TO HOST
SMALL BUSINESS EXPO May 18

The Las Vegas-Clark County Library District plans to host a Small Business Expo from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 18 at the Sahara West Library, 9600 W. Sahara Ave.

Guest speakers scheduled are Robin Jay, a Las Vegas-based motivational speaker and business relationship expert who has been featured internationally on BBC, MSNBC-TV, Newsweek, CNN, The New York Times and more; San Francisco-based entrepreneur, author and blogger Ben Casnoscha, who was named “one of America’s best young entrepreneurs” by BusinessWeek; John Assaraf, who has appeared on “Larry King Live,” “Anderson Cooper 360” and “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” and is the author of two best-selling books, “Having It All” and “The Answer.” Local author and leadership coach Christine Ferguson will moderate.

The event is designed to give attendees access to vendors with information and expertise to take their business to the next step. Network with business experts and explore topics of marketing, funding and licensing.

Panel discussions will provide information about starting and funding a small business, followed by a question-and-answer session.

The Clark County Commodore Computer Club (aka 5C’s) has scheduled its next meeting for 9 to 11 a.m. May 18 in the business conference room of Total Wine & More, 730 S. Rampart Blvd. in Boca Park.

The club is for enthusiasts of the Commodore 64 and Amiga, as well as other computers in the Commodore line. The public is welcome .

HUMANA PLANS VETERANS OPEN HOUSE
FOR MAY 21

Veterans, their families and the public are invited to learn more about Humana’s national Veterans Initiative at a celebration and open house planned from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 21 at the Humana Guidance Center, 8975 W. Charleston Blvd., Suite 100.

There will be guest speakers, refreshments and more. U.S. VETS-Las Vegas will be on hand to provide information and resources. Veterans can learn about job opportunities at Humana and about health and financial protection products.

Launched in 2011, Humana’s Veterans Initiative looks to serve veterans in three ways: jobs, entrepreneurship and well-being. In January, Humana announced it had surpassed its goal of hiring 1,000 veterans and/or their spouses by mid-2014 and made a new commitment to hire an additional 1,000 over the next two years. Humana is also committed to supporting military members’ occupational futures through a $1 million contribution to the national Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities.

PRESENTATION PLANNED AT TEMPLE
BETH SHOLOM ON PAST AND PRESENT ISRAEL

The Active Adults of Temple plans to host a presentation on the past and present Israel at 1:30 p.m. May 21 at Temple Beth Sholom, 10700 Havenwood Lane.

It is slated to include a slideshow of the archaeological tunnels behind the Western Wall in Jerusalem and pictures of old and new sites in Jerusalem showing the contrast between the city of today and that of many years ago. In addition, expect city scenes from Tel Aviv, Eilat, the Golan, the Dead Sea and others.

BEREAVEMENT GROUP TO MEET
AT TEMPLE BETH SHOLOM

A bereavement group plans to meet at 10:30 a.m. every other Wednesday in the social hall of Temple Beth Sholom, 10700 Havenwood Lane. The next meeting is set for May 22.

The meetings are usually scheduled on alternating Wednesdays, but dates can change due to holidays. The purpose is to help widows and widowers understand the process of grieving and prepare for lifestyle changes. The meetings are open to anyone of any faith.

CLARK COUNTY MEDICAL SOCIETY SEEKS WINGED HEART AWARD NOMINATIONS

The Clark County Medical Society announces open public nominations for the inaugural year of the Winged Heart Award.

Awards will be given in three categories: nursing; nonprofit groups whose mission is to improve health and wellness; and rising star for outstanding medical students in Nevada.

The public can submit nominations in two of these categories: nurses and nonprofits. Nominations for the Rising Star Award will come from deans of Nevada’s medical schools. Public nominations are accepted through May 31 at clarkcountymedical.org (click on “nominations and awards”).

UNITED WAY BRINGS BACK
BE THE FACE OF CHANGE CAMPAIGN

United Way of Southern Nevada announced it is bringing back its Be the Face of Change campaign with an opportunity for Southern Nevadans to see themselves on a local billboard and recognize each person’s desire to influence change in three basic building blocks of life: health, education and financial stability.

Through May 31, the community is encouraged to visit facebook.com/unitedwaysn to upload a head shot, which will appear on Las Vegas-area digital billboards.

Many Las Vegas celebrity entertainers, such as Holly Madison, Matt Goss, Claire Sinclair, Josh Strickland, Frankie Moreno, Taylor Hicks, chef Carla Pellegrino and Mac King, are also showing their face of support for United Way of Southern Nevada’s mission and the innovative Facebook/Billboard campaign.

The social media campaign is open to the public, with no monetary contribution required to participate.

GRANT WILL HELP EASTER SEALS

Easter Seals Nevada, the nonprofit group that serves more than 8,000 Nevadans with disabilities every year, was awarded a grant from Workforce Connections of $800,000 to build its employment programming and help place individuals with disabilities and other barriers to employment back in the workforce.
