Sunrise gets re-certification as Primary Stroke Centers

The Joint Commission has given the Sunrise Health System of Hospitals – Sunrise Hospital, MountainView Hospital and Southern Hills Hospital — re-certification as Primary Stroke Centers.
Sunrise said in a statement that the re-certification was received after the hospitals demonstrated compliance with nationally developed standards for stroke care.

“We are proud to achieve this distinction from The Joint Commission,” said Todd Sklamberg, interim chief executive officer of Sunrise Hospital. “Along with our Accredited Chest Pain Centers, both our heart and stroke care programs at all three hospitals provide optimal care for patients needing emergent care.”

The Certified Stroke Centers at each Sunrise Health Hospital offer diagnosis, treatment, education and outreach. A trained stroke team of doctors and nurses works to identify stroke symptoms as quickly as possible, beginning with emergency medical service workers in the field. By the time a patient arrives at the hospital, the Stroke Team is ready. The hospitals of Sunrise Health were each certified as primary stroke centers in 2009.

According to the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association, stroke is the third-leading cause of death in the United States and a leading cause of serious, long-term disability.  On average, someone suffers a stroke every 45 seconds; someone dies of a stroke every three minutes; and 795,000 people suffer a new or recurrent stroke each year.
