Wine and beer event to benefit Vegas PBS

Southern Nevada Public Television is scheduled to host the Splendor in the Glass wine and beer tasting event to benefit Vegas PBS from 3 to 7 p.m. Feb. 11 in the Las Vegas Hotel, 3000 Paradise Road. The event is slated to feature offerings from 60 wineries and breweries, food, a live wine auction, a silent auction, an appearance by chef Julian Serrano and a jazz quintet. Tickets are $75 in advance and $90 at the door and can be purchased at vegaspbs.org/winetasting and at Lee's Discount Liquor, Total Wine & More and Whole Foods Market locations. Teens can Give the gift of duct tape

Free income tax help offered

American Association of Retired Persons tax aide volunteers plan to be on hand from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. most Fridays and Saturdays throughout tax season at the Whitney Library, 5175 E. Tropicana Ave. Services will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Bring photo identification, a Social Security card, previous year's return and any other income and tax information. Players to host 'Footloose' Auditions

The Winchester players plan auditions for their production of "Footloose" at the Winchester Cultural Center, 3130 S. McLeod Drive. Auditions for children 10 to 17 are scheduled from 4 to 8 p.m. today, and auditions for children 5 to 9 are scheduled from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. Singers and dancers are required to bring background music for their audition. Actors are asked to present a dramatic or comedic monologue of their choosing. Those chosen to perform in "Footloose" must enroll in the Winchester Players class, which is set to start from 4 to 8 p.m. today for experienced performers and from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday for beginners. Free Air-conditioning program offered

The Nevada State Contractors Board and the Southern Nevada Air Conditioning Refrigeration Services Contractors Association have launched the seventh annual Mission Cool Off Program, which provides selected individuals or families in Southern Nevada with a free air conditioning unit donated by licensed contractors who are members of the Southern Nevada Air Conditioning Refrigeration Services Contractors Association.

The first 100 applications received by Feb. 29 will be considered for selection. Selections are made by a committee based on a person's or family's special circumstances. The program is not open to tenants, landlords, owners who do not reside at the residence or mobile homeowners. All applicants who qualify must complete and submit all required forms, including the application and media release form, in order to be considered. The forms can be downloaded at snarsca.com or nvcontractorsboard.com or by calling Ranya Botros at 486-1165.

Romantic comedy to be screened

A free screening of "Crazy, Stupid, Love" featuring Julianne Moore, Ryan Gosling and Steve Carell is scheduled from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday at the Sunrise Library, 5400 Harris Ave. The film is rated PG-13.

The Sunrise Manor Town Advisory Board is scheduled to meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Hollywood Recreation and Community Services Center, 1650 S. Hollywood Blvd.

Animal adoption event
set for Saturday at Bass Pro Shops

Senior Spaniel Rescue of Las Vegas is planning Find Your Furry Valentine, a pet adoption event, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Bass Pro Shops at the Silverton, 3333 Blue Diamond Road. United Way approves funds allocation

United Way of Southern Nevada's Immediate Needs Council approved the allocation of $1 million to 12 local agencies providing rent and nutritional assistance. The funding distribution is a part of the nonprofit's mission to ensure that families in need receive support so they can work toward becoming financially independent. Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada was allotted the largest amount of funding, receiving $355,178 for its food pantry services. HELP of Southern Nevada acquired $165,864, and Lutheran Social Services of Nevada obtained $103,119 for food and rent assistance. The Salvation Army Clark County received $159,825 for food services. Other agencies receiving financial aid included: American Red Cross Southern Nevada Chapter, Las Vegas Area Council Boy Scouts of America, Boys & Girls Clubs of Las Vegas, Emergency Aid of Boulder City, HopeLink, Jewish Family Service Agency, The Shade Tree and United Labor Agency of Nevada.

TAX PREPARERS NEEDED
FOR UNITED WAY PROGRAM

United Way of Southern Nevada needs more than 400 volunteers for its Earn It Keep It Save It collaborative, which provides complimentary tax preparation to low-to-moderate income families, individuals and seniors.

Volunteers are needed through April 17 to serve as tax preparers, greeters, quality reviewers and site coordinators. Those donating their time will receive tax law and e-file training and IRS certification at convenient training locations throughout Southern Nevada.
