Town advisory boards to meet

The Paradise Town Advisory Board has scheduled its biweekly meeting for 7 p.m. Oct. 11 at the Paradise Recreation and Community Services Center, 4775 S. McLeod Drive.

The Winchester Town Advisory Board has scheduled its biweekly meeting for 6 p.m. Oct. 12 at the Winchester Cultural Center, 3130 S. McLeod Drive.

The Whitney Town Advisory Board has scheduled its biweekly meeting for 6 p.m. Oct. 13 at the Whitney Recreation Center, 5712 E. Missouri Ave.

The Sunrise Manor Town Advisory Board has scheduled its biweekly meeting for 6:30 p.m. Oct. 13 at the Hollywood Recreation and Community Services Center, 1650 S. Hollywood Blvd.

Vegas PBS to host 5K run and Walk

Vegas PBS is set to host its second annual Keeping Kids Fit 5K Run & 1-Mile Walk at 8 a.m. on Saturday at the Vegas PBS Educational Technology Campus, 3050 E. Flamingo Road. The event supports the Keeping Kids Fit program, which primarily assists low-income families with children 2 to 12 by promoting a lifetime of healthy habits. They hope to expand the program.

Race registration is $40 the day of the race or $35 through Thursday. On-site registration runs from 6:30 a.m. to

Library to host free Tutoring series

A Princeton review series is scheduled at the Sunrise Library, 5400 Harris Ave. Princeton Review - Study Skills is set to be offered from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday . Princeton Review - Practice ACT Test is set from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday. Princeton Review - Practice SAT Test is set from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday. The programs are free and open to the public. NEVADA COOPERATIVE EXTENSION OFFERS INFORMATION ON INVASIVE SPECIES

University of Nevada Cooperative Extension Master Gardener volunteers are working with community members to maintain the health of Nevada's urban forests. Through the Citizens Monitoring for Invasive Bark Beetles program, Master Gardeners provide information on maintaining tree vigor by recognizing problems as they first arise, before extensive damage occurs.

The information is offered free. Homeowners, landscapers and community groups can arrange to have a bark beetle workshop on their site or at the Cooperative Extension office in Las Vegas. For more information, contact Dr. Angela O'Callaghan at 257-5581 or email ocallaghana@unce.unr.edu.

Rappel down the Rio for a good cause

The Rio, 3700 W. Flamingo Road, is set to host Over the Edge to benefit Special Olympics Nevada on Oct. 15. As many as 100 people are expected rappel down the northwest side of the building to raise money for the charity.

Participants must raise more than $1,000 and preregister at overtheedgelasvegas.com to take the leap. The rappelling will be supervised by Over the Edge, a Nova Scotia company that has organized dozens of rappelling events all over North America.

PEACE CORPS to host INTEREST MEETING

The Peace Corps plans to host an event from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 11 at the Green Valley Library, 2797 N. Green Valley Parkway. Registration is required. For more information, call 207-4261.
