Tax ‘n spenders at work (ad infinitum)

Subsidized public transportation of all kinds cost a bundle, we all know that. There is no such thing as a free lunch.

It's nice, however, to be reminded how expensive that lunch can be. Here's a story about fares for paratransit possibly going up in Las Vegas. It includes this nifty reminder:

"The RTC estimates a one-way trip via paratransit costs $37; riders pay $2.96 to use the service. The state, however, reimburses the RTC for the cost of those rides."

I'm not saying anything about the merits of paratransit. I'm only saying $37 vs. $2.96. Who is minding the store?

PS: I just paid $25 (with tip) for a 10-minute cab ride.

PPS: Did I already ask who is minding the store?
