The journey of John L. Smith

Even though we knew the story in advance, reading John L. Smith's column this morning about his diagnoses and treatment for cancer still caused my wife and I to pause and think as if this were the first time we had heard it.

As you probably know, I went through prostate cancer surgery a year ago followed immediately by open heart surgery. We know the feeling. You wonder "Is this it?" followed by a subset of questions about this generation and the next. Eventually you come to a place in which you become resigned to the idea that it is best to think about things one day at a time.

The ability to think beyond tomorrow is both a luxury and a curse.

I was glad to see John write about his cancer. I hope he continues. And, of course, we look forward to reading about John L's recovery and discoveries along the way. It's a journey, buddy.
