THE LIST: DVDs, CDs and books hitting stores week of Oct. 5

DVDS
“The Karate Kid” (PG): This remake of the beloved 1984 hit moves the action to China, where Detroit 12-year-old Dre Parker (Jaden Smith, son of Will and Jada Pinkett Smith) experiences extreme culture clash when the class bully confronts him, until apartment maintenance man Mr. Han (Jackie Chan) instructs the newcomer in the intricacies of kung fu — and life.
In the chiller “Splice” (R), two cocky scientists (Adrien Brody, Sarah Polley) defy legal and ethical boundaries to conduct a dangerous experiment — splicing together human and animal DNA to create a new organism. And Freddy Krueger returns in a new version of “A Nightmare on Elm Street” (R), with “Shutter Island’s” Jackie Earle Haley as the razor-fingered fiend who keeps invading the nightmares of teens (Kyle Gallner, Katie Cassidy and Rooney Mara among them) on the title street.
Horror also leads the lineup of titles that never played local theaters with “The Human Centipede” (not rated), about a maniacal mad doctor (Dieter Laser) whose hideous surgical procedure unites two American tourists (Ashley C. Williams and Ashlynn Yennie) and a Japanese counterpart (Akihiro Kitamura). Elijah Wood stars as an American student studying with a brilliant mathematician in “The Oxford Murders” (R). In “Agora” (R), Rachel Weisz plays an ancient Egyptian astronomer caught up in political upheaval. And the animated, Oscar-nominated “The Book of Kells” (not rated) recounts a fanciful tale of ancient Irish times; Brendan Gleeson leads the vocal cast. Speaking of animation, those “Penguins of Madagascar” get into the Halloween spirit with “I Was a Penguin Zombie” (not rated).
And an all-time animated great tops today’s standout Blu-ray Disc debuts: 1991’s Oscar-winning “Beauty and the Beast” (G). Two Humphrey Bogart classics (both unrated) also turn up on Blu-ray: 1941’s “The Maltese Falcon” and 1948’s “The Treasure of the Sierra Madre,” along with a 50th-anniversary edition of the 1960 Rat Pack fave “Ocean’s 11” (not rated), 1973’s “The Exorcist: Extended Director’s Cut & Original Theatrical Edition” (R), 1985’s “Rocky IV” (PG) and 1992’s “The Last of the Mohicans: Director’s Definitive Cut” (R).
Tuning in to TV transfers, a new chapter of a PBS favorite comes up to bat in “Baseball: The Tenth Inning” (not rated). Series arriving on DVD (all unrated unless otherwise noted) include “Caprica: Season 1.0,” “SGU: Stargate Universe — The Complete First Season,” “Cake Boss: Season Two” (PG), “Gunsmoke: Fourth Season, Volume One,” “Ally McBeal: The Complete Fourth Season,” “Bones: The Complete Fifth Season,” “Medium: The Sixth Season,” “All in the Family: The Complete Seventh Season” and “The Mary Tyler Moore Show: The Complete Seventh Season.”

CDS
Toby Keith, “Bullets in the Gun”: Namby pamby cowboy wannabes better be sweating “Bullets” right about now.
That’s because country badass Toby Keith is back with a new album of hot-under-the-collar honky tonk.
On “Gun,” Keith’s heart and knuckles bleed in equal measure, as he doesn’t shy away from displaying his sensitive side.
Or punching you in the face.

There Is a Heaven, Let’s Keep It a Secret”; Fistful of Mercy (Joseph Arthur, Ben Harper and Dhani Harrison), “As I Call You Down”; Donavon Frankenreiter, “Glow”; Guster, “Easy Wonderful”; Fran Healy (of Travis), “Wreckorder”; Tim Kasher (frontman of Cursive), “The Game of Monogamy”; Raul Malo, “Sinners & Saints”; Bruno Mars, “Doo-wops & Hooligans”; Joe Satriani, “Black Swans and Wormhole Wizards”; Corin Tucker (of Sleater-Kinney), “1,000 Years”; and KT Tunstall, “Tiger Suit.”
