THE LIST: New DVDs, CDs and books for week of Sept. 16

DVDS
“Speed Racer” (PG): The summer movie season definitely has ended, because bummer summer movies are starting to show up on DVD, including this roadkill revamp of the cult cartoon from “Matrix” mavens Larry and Andy Wachowski. “Into the Wild’s” Emile Hirsch stars as the speed-demon title character out to avenge his brother’s mysterious death; Christina Ricci, John Goodman, Susan Sarandon and Matthew Fox round out the starring cast.
Other theatrical releases hitting the DVD track include the romantic comedy “Made of Honor” (PG-13), with Patrick “McDreamy” Dempsey as a Manhattan millionaire trying to win his art-restorer best friend (Michelle Monaghan) from her Scottish-hunk fiancé (Kevin McKidd); “The Love Guru” (PG-13), with Mike Myers as the title swami to Jessica Alba, Justin Timberlake and Ben Kingsley; and “88 Minutes” (R), with Al Pacino as a famed forensic psychologist who receives a death threat that he’s only got (you guessed it) 88 minutes to live.
Leading the documentary lineup: “Young @ Heart” (PG), about the members of the title chorus (average age 80), who spend their golden years singing covers of songs from the Talking Heads, the Clash and Coldplay. And the award-winning “Rape of Europa” (not rated), postponed from an earlier date, recounts the Nazi campaign to plunder great art during World War II.
On the indie beat, “Before the Rains” (PG-13) serves up culture-clash drama in colonial 1937 India, featuring “Law & Order’s” Linus Roache as a British spice baron embroiled with a naive employee. “Snow Angels” (R), directed by “Pineapple Express’ ” David Gordon Green, follows the fates of two small-town characters: a beleaguered waitress (Kate Beckinsale) and a teen (Michael Angarano) who has a crush on her. Sam Rockwel and, “Juno’s” Olivia Thirlby co-star. And a gambling-addicted TV producer (Matthew Broderick) travels to Las Vegas to convince his troubled niece (Brittany Snow) to enter rehab in “Finding Amanda” (R) — which, naturally, never actually filmed in Las Vegas.
Today’s crop of TV transfers (all unrated) provide a refresher course for several returning series, including “Dirty Sexy Money: Season One,” “Private Practice: The Complete First Season,” “Pushing Daisies: The Complete First Season,” “Chuck: the Complete First Season” and “Criminal Minds: The Complete Third Season.”
And for nostalgia buffs, "The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour: The Best of Season 3” revives the final season of the late-’60s variety show in all its uncensored glory, with comedy (featuring George Carlin, Bob Newhart, Steve Martin, Jonathan Winters and David Steinberg) and music (from such legends as The Doors, Ike & Tina Turner, Harry Belafonte, Ray Charles, Judy Collins, Liberace and Joan Baez — not to mention the cast of “Hair").
Vintage song-and-dance favorites, meanwhile, top today’s oldies but goodies, including “The Busby Berkeley Collection, Vol. 2” (not rated), featuring ’30s musicals “Gold Diggers of 1937,” “Gold Diggers of Paris,” “Varsity Show” and “Hollywood Hotel” (The latter spotlights Benny Goodman’s swingin’ big band — and the tap-happy anthem “Hooray for Hollywood.”) And the Oscar-winning ’50s musical gems “Gigi” and “An American in Paris” return in two-disc special editions.
Joining the nostalgia bash, the “Charlie Chan Collection, Vol. 5” takes the venerable detective from New York to Rio in search of clues, while hard-riding Joel McCrea saddles up in the ’50s Louis L’Amour Western “Stranger on Horseback.” Shirley MacLaine, meanwhile, plays multiple roles in 1967’s “Woman Times Seven” (not rated), with Michael Caine and Peter Sellers among her men. And for the ultimate in European sophistication, try this ’50s trio from legendary director Max Opuls: the romantic roundelay “La Ronde,” the Guy de Maupassant trilogy “Le Plaisir” with Jean Gabin and Danielle Darrieux and the dazzling “The Earrings of Madame de ...” with Darrieux and Charles Boyer.

CDS
  Nelly, “Brass Knuckles”: Brass?
  What a common metal.
You’d think a cat like Nelly would come with something like “Diamond-Encrusted, Ruby-Enhanced, Emerald-Flecked, Polished Platinum Knuckles” or some such nonsense.
No, he’s not the best rapper in the game, but Nelly is among the most well-monied and shamelessly commercial — this is a dude who actually penned a tune about a specific brand of sneakers to cash in on the endorsement deal.
He’s the rap equivalent of all those product placement moments in mainstream action flicks.
But hey, at least the guy is putting his budget to use: Nelly’s latest disc features guest appearances by such big names as Fergie, Ciara, Lil Wayne, Snoop Dogg, Akon and LL Cool J.
Also in stores: All That Remains, “Overcome”; Marc Broussard, “Keep Coming Back”; Buckcherry, “Black Butterfly”; Lindsey Buckingham, “Gift of Screws”; George Clinton, “George Clinton and His Gangsters of Love”; The Cure, “Hypnagogic States (EP)”; DJ Khaled, “We Global”; James, “Hey Ma”; Musiq Soulchild, “On My Radio”; Ne-Yo, “Year of the Gentleman”; and The Veronicas, “Hook Me Up.”

“Brisingr (Inheritance Cycle No. 3)” by Christopher Paolini: The long-awaited third installment of Christopher Paolini’s series hits shelves Saturday as book-sellers hope to take advantage of a “Harry Potter”-type weekend release.
Eragon and his dragon, Saphira, face more hard times after escaping the battle with the Empire’s warriors. Now this former farmboy struggles to keep his promises while danger lurks behind every corner. Eragon is forced into unimaginable choices as he fights to unite the rebels and defeat the king.
