The NBC screw up on Trayvon Martin case

Here's what NBC first presented viewers:

Zimmerman: "This guy looks like he’s up to no good. He looks black."

Here's what the 911 tape actually said:

Zimmerman: "This guy looks like he’s up to no good. Or he’s on drugs or something. It’s raining and he’s just walking around, looking about."

Dispatcher: "OK, and this guy — is he black, white or Hispanic?"

Zimmerman: "He looks black."

What a screw up. It's a good thing NBC now comes clean.

It's a bad thing that it comes so late.

It's also bad in that NBC tells us nothing substantantive about their "investigation." For example, how in the holy hell did any person of honest average intelligence (which I presume NBC employs) put together that tape in so false a fashion? Was it on purpose? Which higher-ups checked it? NBC ain't sayin' nothin'.

There's been a lot of rush to judgment in the Trayvon Martin case. Latter-day correction notwithstanding, NBC helped facilitate that bad judgment. Shame on them.
