Life in Death: Day of the Dead, a two-day festival featuring craft sales, food vendors and displays, is scheduled today and Wednesday at the Winchester Cultural Center, 3150 S. McLeod Drive. The juried Day of the Dead Art Exhibit is scheduled to be on display through Nov. 11.
Poets Maile Chapman, Alejandro Mozqueda and Jairo García are winners in the festival's calavera competition. The calavera, a Day of the Dead tradition, usually satirizes the prominent by reminding us that no matter how grand humans become, everyone dies. The winners are scheduled to read their pieces at 8 p.m. Wednesday . Finalist poets Rigoberto Cárdenas, Ofelia Zamorano Ruelas, Hugo Rios, Laura Serrano García and Leo Zamorano Ruelas are invited to read their work at times throughout the festival.
