Trudi’s romance quickie: ‘The Captive Heart’
“The Captive Heart” by Bertrice Small is a historical romance that takes place in the year 1491.
Alix Givet is the daughter of Queen Margaret’s physician. During the flight of the king and queen from England, Alix and her father are left at a Northumbrian keep because of her father’s illness. There she marries the lord’s son and heir, who is deeply in love with his mistress. Alix is extremely mistreated by her husband because he hates her, as she is not his beloved mistress who is of low birth and an unsuitable bride.
After the suicide of her cruel husband, Alix flees his father who has now become obsessed with her and wants her for his own bride. Alix finds herself in the home of a Scottish laird with a small daughter. She makes a place for herself in his household as his daughter’s teacher, and the laird teaches Alix about passion and what a physical relationship between a man and a woman should be.
There is suspense, intrigue and romance in this book. I couldn’t put it down!
