Volcano explodes after crater wall collapses in Hawaii — VIDEO
A lava lake active since 2008 in Halemaumau crater on Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano had been rising since last week, leading to a collapse Sunday and a spectacular fiery blast.
Last week, lava began splashing over the rim, according to Associated Press, marking the first time it has become visible to the public in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
A portion of the crater collapsed on Sunday about 1:20 p.m., triggering an explosion of lava spatter. The lava lake continued to slosh around for moments after.
Last week the lava lake overflowed, creating a spectacular, volitale show for those who were able to see it.
The United States Geological Survey told Hawaii News Now last week that the volcano will continue to overflow intermittently, but there hasn’t been a large eruption at the spot since 1924, when the lava lake doubled in size.
On Thursday, Chile’s Calbuco volcano erupted for the third time in eight days, following a massive eruption that prompted 1,500 people to evacuate. Debris piled up as much as two feet in some areas, and much of the surrounding area was left covered in ash.
