Locomotives seek new mascot
through contest
The Las Vegas Locomotives of the United Football League are seeking an energetic entertainer to take on the role of their Diesel Locomotive team mascot.
The team is hosting the "Who Can Be Diesel?" competition. Interested parties should be 18 or older and have a background in gymnastics, dance, theater or the performing arts. A contest entry form at can be downloaded at lasvegaslocos.com.
Applications must be returned to the Las Vegas Locomotives office at 750 Pilot Road, Suite A, Las Vegas, NV 89119 by July 13 at 5 p.m. Semifinalist candidates will be drawn from the applications for preliminary interviews. From this group, a finalist will be chosen whom the fans can vote on to choose the new "Diesel."
Those applying for the position must be willing to perform as Diesel for all four home games in addition to select team activities throughout the community during the season. The winning candidate will receive paid compensation for performing as Diesel throughout the season.
Star Catchers to host preview show, raffle before heading to Disneyland
The Star Catchers Support Crew, the parent group of the Winchester Star Catchers dance program, plans to host a preview show, silent auction and raffle Wednesday at the Winchester Cultural Center, 3130 S. McLeod Drive, in celebration of the team's planned trip to perform at Disneyland. Bidding for the silent auction begins at 5 p.m. with the performance at 6 p.m. and the raffle to follow at 6:30 p.m. Admission tickets are $5.
In 2007, the Star Catchers became as the first dance group from Clark County Parks and Recreation to perform at Disney's California Adventure theme park. This year, the group auditioned in January and earned the honor of performing at Disneyland, where team members are set to perform Saturday and attend workshops Sunday led by Disney choreographers.
Proceeds from the preview event will benefit dancers struggling to pay the $300-per-student trip expenses.

Crochet and Knit Club set to meet
A crochet and knit club for seniors 50 or older is scheduled to meet from 12:30 to 3 p.m. July 12 at the Parkdale Community Center, 3200 Ferndale St. The group meets every second Tuesday. The group makes and donates booties, hats, scarves and blankets to various charities, teen shelters and cancer foundations.

Blackjacks set to play rugby

Photography exhibition, presentation planned at whitney library
A juried exhibition of first-place images in 14 categories of the Nevada Camera Club 2011 Annual Electronic Image Competition is scheduled to be on display during regular library hours from July 12 to Oct. 18 at the Whitney Library, 5175 E. Tropicana Ave.
The show is set to feature color and monochromatic images from the competition and selected works by Doug Walsh, the Nevada Camera Club's Photographer of the Year.
