YOUR WEEKEND: Catch free flicks all around town

Free is usually the best price for anything. And there are plenty of places to catch free movies around town, no matter what side of the valley you live on.

North Las Vegas kicks off its free Movie Madness series June 6 at Nature Discovery Park, 2627 Nature Park Drive. The first showing will be of "Surf's Up," an animated mockumentary of the Penguin World Surfing Championship. Rated PG. Bring a blanket and picnic basket to enjoy the movie on a large screen under the stars. The movie will begin at dusk after 7:30 p.m. For a complete schedule, visit North Las Vegas' Web site.

Several Las Vegas-Clark County libraries also present free screenings. At Spring Valley Library, 4280 S. Jones Blvd., catch "Gods and Monsters," the story of gay filmmaker James Whale, who develops a friendship with an ex-Marine after the Korean War, at 2 p.m. June 7. Not rated.

"To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newman," the tale of three drag queens traveling across the country when their car breaks down in a small town, is playing at Las Vegas Library, 833 Las Vegas Blvd. North, at 2 p.m. June 7. Rated PG-13.

For those on the northeast side of town, Sunrise Library, 5400 Harris Ave., will show "National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets," a history-laden treasure quest involving the truth behind President Abraham Lincoln's assassination, at 10:30 a.m. June 8.

And for those who live in the Whitney area, the Whitney Library, 5175 E. Tropicana Ave., will show "To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newman" at 11:30 a.m. on June 8.

Later this month, the Rainbow Library, 3150 N. Buffalo Drive, will host several screenings outdoors at its Moonlight, Movies and Music series. Complete library events can be found on the district's Web site.

In Henderson, MonteLago Village at Lake Las Vegas shows free movies outdoors at its Movies al Fresco series on Thursdays. A complete schedule can be found at the resort's Web site.

The District at Green Valley Ranch will host the Outdoor Picture Show series. Catch "TMNT," the animated movie of everyone's favorite ninja-fighting adolescent shelled dudes, at 8 p.m. June 6. Rated PG. On June 7, watch "Evan Almighty," the sequel to "Bruce Almighty" starring Steve Carrell as a modern-day Noah, at 8  p.m. Rated PG. Free popcorn is provided, and guests are encourage to bring snacks and blankets.

Later this month, Walnut Park, 3075 N. Walnut Road, will show free movies outside, as well. The schedule for that series can be found on Clark County's Web site.
