YOUR WEEKEND: Celtic gathering, Heritage Parade, children’s festival and more planned

Valley residents have several reasons to get out and enjoy pleasant weather and some activities this weekend.

Ride for Fallen Heroes
Saddle up your motorcycle for the Ride for Fallen Heroes, set to start at 8 a.m. Sunday at Red Rock Harley-Davidson, 2260 S. Rainbow Blvd., and travel to Mount Charleston. Also, a car show with music, food, raffle prizes and more is set for 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the motorcycle dealership. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Friends of Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Foundation.

Celtic Gathering and Highland Games
The Celtic Gathering and Highland Games are scheduled for 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Floyd Lamb Park at Tule Springs, 9200 Tule Springs Road. The event will include bagpipers, dancing, genealogical research and Highland games, such as the hammer throw and the caber toss. General admission is $15, and tickets for children 5 to 12, seniors and military personnel are $9. Children younger than 5 admitted free. For more Information, visit lasvegascelticsociety.org.

Star Party
The topic will be Saturn during a Las Vegas Astronomical Society Star Party planned at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area Visitor Center, 1000 Scenic Drive. The event is set to include an indoor educational lecture and outdoor viewing of the night sky using society members’ telescopes. The cost to attend is the park entry fee, which is $5 for vehicles and free for those on foot or bicycle. For more information, visit lvastronomy.com.

UNLV Festival of Communities
The theme will be unity through diversity during the Festival of Communities set for noon to 7 p.m. Saturday at the UNLV Student Union at the 4505 S. Maryland Parkway campus. Food, art, games and cultural performances are planned. Visit getinvolved.unlv.edu/entertainment for more details.

Clark County Children’s Festival
The 18th annual Clark County Children’s Festival is set for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Winchester Cultural Center, 3130 S. McLeod Drive. While much of the event is free, there are minimal fees for rides, concessions and some activities. An Animal Kingdom will feature animals from Roos-N-More, a Moapa-based zoo that will include goats, turkeys, pigs, cows, sheep and exotic animals such as a coatimundi, a mammal in the raccoon family, and a tegu lizard. Pony and camel rides also will be available. The Nature Kingdom will focus on a family learning program in the Desert Demonstration Garden. The Renaissance Kingdom will have its own king and queen and sword-fighting demonstrations provided by the Kingdom of Albion, a local re-enactment group. Also planned are garden tours and scavenger hunts. Organizers plan to have rides and activities including a Ferris wheel, a train and a climbing wall in the Adventure Kingdom. There also will be a fitness course and carnival games. The Entertainment Kingdom will include an outdoor stage, with performances planned by the Winchester’s Star Catchers hip-hop youth dance team, the Winchester’s Encore Show Choir, the Razzmatazz Dance Company and others.

Henderson Heritage Parade & Festival
The Henderson Heritage Parade & Festival is planned for 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday at the Henderson Events Plaza, 200 S. Water St. The event will include breakfast with the mayor, a parade, a classic car show and an international folklife festival featuring music, dance, food, crafts and more from several countries. Breakfast with the mayor is from 8 to 9 a.m. on the Henderson Convention Center lawn, and the parade begins at 10 a.m. on Water Street from Ocean Avenue to Victory Road. Admission is free.
