YOUR WEEKEND: Police department’s mounted unit to host annual competition
March 26, 2010 - 8:00 am
Civilian horseback riders will saddle up for the annual Friends of Metro Mounted Unit Obstacle Competition planned for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the main arena at Horseman’s Park, 5800 E. Flamingo Road.
The fundraiser will benefit the Metropolitan Police Department’s mounted patrol. The event is for civilian riders who want to compete against each other using their own horses on a timed obstacle course used by the department to train mounted officers. Trophies will be awarded to first-, second- and third-place winners in different age groups.
A K-9 demonstration is planned at noon, as well as a microchip clinic for horses from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The $35 clinic charge will include the microchip registration fee. Also, beverages and barbecued food will be available for purchase, and various prizes will be raffled off.
Horse and rider team registration begins at 7:30 a.m. Entry fees are $45 for participants ages 14 and younger and $50 for others. The event is free for spectators. All paid participants will receive a $10 coupon to be used at the T-shirt booth.
