UNLV crushes South Carolina Upstate 88-58

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Kendall Wallace and Oscar Bellfield each scored 16 points to lead UNLV over South Carolina-Upstate 88-58 tonight at the Thomas & Mack Center. … Wallace had 14 first-half points, including two four-point plays in the span of 2:35. Bellfield was 6 of 7 from the field and had five assists for UNLV (10-1), which only had seven turnovers. … The Rebels next play SMU on Tuesday in the Diamond Head Classic in Honolulu.

UNLV beats Weber State 72-63

Matt Shaw made four 3-pointers and scored a career-high 16 points, and Chace Stanback scored 15 points as UNLV defeated Weber State 72-63 at the Thomas & Mack Center.

College Basketball – UNLV at Southern Utah

CEDAR CITY, Utah — Tre’Von Willis scored 16 points and led a second-half surge as UNLV pulled away to defeat Southern Utah 77-59 tonight at Centrum Arena.

Chace Stanback’s 3-pointer lifted the Rebels to a 31-30 halftime lead, and Willis took charge by scoring 11 points after halftime.

Willis made a 3-pointer, then came away with a steal and passed to Derrick Jasper for a dunk to put UNLV up 43-32. Oscar Bellfield’s 3 extended the Rebels’ run to 23-6 in the first eight minutes of the second half.

Stanback scored a team-high 10 points in the first half and finished with 15 for UNLV (8-1).

Rebels cruise past Hawaii 77-53, advance to championship

HONOLULU (AP) — UNLV stymied Hawaii’s offense in the first half and continued its pressure as it cruised to a 77-53 win in the semifinal of the Diamond Head Classic tonight. … The Runnin’ Rebels (12-1) advanced to the tournament’s championship game on Christmas against USC, which bested Saint Mary’s 60-49 in the other semifinal game.

HONOLULU — Marcus Johnson scored 21 points and Southern California used its defense and inside strength to defeat UNLV 67-56 in the championship game of the Diamond Head Classic.

PASADENA, Calif. — Alabama linebacker Eryk Anders forced a fumble on his blindside sack of Texas backup quarterback Garrett Gilbert with 3:02 left Thursday night to help the top-ranked Crimson Tide hold on for a 37-21 victory in the BCS title game — a win that figured to be much easier when Alabama knocked out Colt McCoy early in the first quarter.

With McCoy on the sideline nursing a shoulder injury, the Tide rolled to a 24-6 lead at halftime, the final touchdown coming when lineman Marcell Dareus picked off a shovel pass and returned it 28 yards for the score late in the second quarter.

Rebels rally to beat San Diego State

Tre’Von Willis scored 17 of his 23 points in the second half, including nine in a row in one stretch, as UNLV defeated San Diego State 76-66 Wednesday night.

Willis, who entered the game as the Rebels’ leading scorer with a 15.5-point average, broke a 50-50 deadlock with a layup that gave UNLV a 52-50 lead with 10:09 remaining.

College Basketball – Air Force at UNLV

UNLV 60, Air Force 50

Kendall Wallace hit four 3-pointers early in the second half to rally UNLV to a 60-50 victory over Air Force at the Thomas & Mack Center.

The Falcons, who have lost 22 straight Mountain West Conference games, never trailed in the first half and led by as many as nine points.

Wallace, who finished with 12 points, made four 3s in a five-minute span to turn around the game. His last 3 put UNLV up 39-34 with 13:07 remaining.

Tre’Von Willis scored 13 points and Chace Stanback had 12 for the Rebels (17-4, 5-2 MWC).

UNLV junior guard Derrick Jasper injured his left knee with 1:16 remaining in the first half. Jasper, who needed surgery on the same knee two years ago, had to be helped off the floor.

Willis scores career-high 30 points in conference win

FORT WORTH, Texas — Tre’Von Willis scored a career-high 30 points to lead UNLV to a 79-70 victory over Texas Christian at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. … Chace Stanback tied his career high with 19 points and Matt Shaw added 10 points for the Rebels (16-4, 4-2 Mountain West Conference). … Willis has scored 20 points or more in all six MWC games. Willis and Stanback combined to score 21 consecutive points for UNLV late in the second half.
