Commission looks at declaring emergency for medical aid programs

Clark County’s medical aid programs face a $13 million shortfall this year and $11 million in the next budget year because of falling property tax revenue. That’s not counting the money the programs could lose if the Legislature grabs revenue from the county to help fill the state’s budget gaps.

County seeks ombudsmen for coroner’s inquests

Clark County officials have begun searching for ombudsmen to act as appointed counsel at coroner’s inquests into police killings. Commissioners last month changed the rules for inquests, most notably the creation of ombudsmen who could offer legal counsel to bereaved families at hearings.

Police officer to stand trial in deadly pursuit

A Las Vegas police officer will stand trial for charges related to a May police pursuit that left one person dead and another injured. Aron Carpenter faces one count each of felony reckless driving and misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter for his role in the pursuit that ended with the death of 26-year-old Ivan Carrillo.

Suspect pleads guilty in drug cartel kidnapping

Adolph Vargas, one of five defendants indicted in the 2008 kidnapping of 6-year-old Cole Puffinburger, pleaded guilty to drug and money laundering charges Tuesday in federal court in Las Vegas. Four other defendants, including two men charged with abducting the boy from his home over a drug deal gone bad, are to stand trial next week.

Man shoots at robber at North Las Vegas Walmart

An attempted robbery in a North Las Vegas Walmart parking lot Tuesday afternoon ended with the intended victim shooting at the robber, North Las Vegas police said. The shooting occurred about 3:20 p.m. at a store at 3950 W. Lake Mead Blvd., near Rancho Drive.

Gov. Brian Sandoval will have to solve Nevada’s budget crisis himself, U.S. Sen. Harry Reid said Tuesday in delivering a tough message that the federal government won’t come to the rescue. Instead, the Democratic leader of the Senate suggested the new Republican governor should reconsider his campaign pledge not to raise taxes as he tries to fill a two-year budget gap of at least $1 billion.

Raggio replacement opposes tax increase

Tuesday’s appointment of former U.S. Attorney Greg Brower to replace retiring state Sen. Bill Raggio of Reno makes it less likely that taxes will be raised during the legislative session that begins Feb. 7. Brower, a Republican and a former assemblyman, made it clear to the four Washoe County commissioners who picked him for the job that he opposes raising taxes.
