For Centennial Hills resident Sue Gaines, it was the hospital social worker she met after her daughter’s suicide attempt who changed her family’s life. She gave Gaines the phone number for the National Alliance on Mental Illness.

Survivors: Remembering the pain and celebrating freedom from domestic violence

Survivors of domestic violence, including a woman whose hands were severed in a machete attack, make a united stand Monday against the culture of silence and shame that can prevent victims from seeking life-saving help. The third annual Walk Against Domestic Violence Homicide, sponsored by Safe Faith United, drew about 50 people. It began at the Doolittle Community Center on J Street and ended on Stella Street, near Lake Mead and Martin Luther King boulevards.
