A few years ago, I had the opportunity to fish for walleye and sauger at Lake of the Woods, a rather large body of water located where Minnesota and Canada come together. While there, I learned just how tasty walleye and sauger can be and had my first introduction to the use of downriggers.
■ LAKE MEAD — Despite inclement weather last weekend, anglers had success. While shad were challenging to catch, once they were hooked on a line, the striped bass were quick to bite. Boulder Harbor and Vegas Wash were productive areas. Some anglers made it to the shallower waters of Callville Bay to take advantage of the largemouth and smallmouth gathering there. The fish are feeding heavily in preparation for long periods of going without while guarding their beds. Various lures such as rattletraps, jigs, spinnerbaits and crankbaits can work well at different times. Often, varying your approach may be necessary.

Xavier Thames scored 19 points to rally No. 10 San Diego State to a 73-64 victory over UNLV before a season-high crowd of 16,030 at the Thomas & Mack Center.
U.S. Sen. Harry Reid of Nevada began setting the stage this week on another bid to extend federal unemployment benefits that have expired for 2 million workers since late December.
The federal government owns about 85 percent of the land in Nevada. Transferring much of that acreage to local control or private ownership would do wonders for the state’s economy. A bill currently before the House of Representatives would help do that and more by giving the Silver State its first national monument: the Tule Springs Fossil Bed National Monument, north of Las Vegas. But an amendment that seeks to deny Nevada the proceeds from federal land sales could derail the proposal.
