The hottest, driest and lowest national park, Death Valley is well-known for its blistering summer temperatures. For that reason, the best time of year to visit is what’s considered the offseason in most other parks: mid-October to mid-May.

Rainbow Basin Natural Area is a fossil-laden region of multi-colored rock formations, mesas, desert canyons and winding washes north of Barstow, Calif. The area makes an ideal spot for camping, hiking, scenic touring, wildlife watching and photography.
Yosemite is one of the most popular national parks, especially in summer and fall, when it is difficult to find parking spots at viewpoints and attractions. But winter is a different story. In this season, when Yosemite becomes a winter wonderland, the crowds melt away.
Parowan, Utah, occupies a peaceful valley at the floor of a stream-carved canyon just off Interstate 15 north of Cedar City, about 200 miles from Las Vegas.
Ghost towns are scattered all across Nevada. A few of them are still sparsely inhabited, but most are completely abandoned.
One of the prettiest side roads in Nevada, the Success Summit Loop near Ely packs a lot of scenery into 38 miles. The route climbs over a high forested summit after leaving U.S. Highway 93 either north or south of Ely and remains open from snowmelt to snowfall, usually from April through mid-November.
During the next month, thousands of “citizen scientists” will participate in the 110th Annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count. Braving cold and often inclement conditions, these volunteers assemble before dawn in pre-selected locations between Dec. 14 and Jan. 5 to tally the birds they see during a full day in the outdoors. In Nevada, counts are planned for locations in Southern Nevada, as well as sites near Elko, Snake Valley near Great Basin National Park, Carson City and Minden.
