Plainridge Park, first Massachusetts casino, opens

Massachusetts’ first casino opened Wednesday when Penn National Gaming took the wraps off the $250 million Plainridge Park casino in Plainville.

The 44,000 square-foot casino has 1,250 slot machines, which includes electronic table games.

Among the restaurant offerings is Doug Flutie’s Sports Pub, an eatery themed after the Heisman Trophy winning Boston College quarterback, who also played for the New England Patriots.

Flutie was on hand for the ribbon-cutting, along with Penn National CEO Tim Wilmott.

“It’s never easy being the first operator in a new jurisdiction,” Wilmott said.

The casino is attached to the Plainridge Race Track, which offers live harness racing.

Massachusetts has two other casinos in the works — an $800 million resort MGM Resorts International is building in Springfield and a $1.7 billion casino in the Boston area from Wynn Resorts Ltd.
