State EPA accepts waste disposal comments

Nevada‘s Environmental Protection Division will accept public comments through Aug. 25 on a draft permit renewal for the federal Department of Energy to operate four hazardous waste disposal units at the Nevada National Security Site.

The units include one for storing hazardous waste mixed with low-level radioactive waste, located at the security site‘s Area 5 landfill, about 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas.

That is the same area where the Department of Energy is disposing of a potent form of uranium waste from Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee.

To submit comments and see documents about the draft permit, go to the division‘s website, http://ndep.nv.gov/admin/public.htm#bff, send an email to jcostarica@ndep.nv.gov, or write to: Nevada Division of Environmental Protection, Bureau of Federal Facilities, ATTN: Justin Costa Rica, 2030 E. Flamingo Road, Suite 230, Las Vegas, NV 89119.
