11 injured in explosion at Los Angeles-area building

LA HABRA, Calif. — Authorities now say 11 people were hurt — two critically — in an explosion and fire at a Southern California metal polishing business.

Los Angeles County fire Inspector Scott Miller says the blast in La Habra occurred shortly before 10 a.m. Tuesday in the shop’s overhead ducts. He says investigators suspect that a buildup of lint or dust may have caused the blast.

Firefighters contained the resulting blaze in about 40 minutes. TV news reports showed workers with blackened faces and hands outside the plant.

Mora says the two critically injured men had burns and most of the rest suffered smoke inhalation.

He says the business in an industrial area of the Los Angeles suburb makes and polishes car wheels.
