Man convicted in federal court in Las Vegas bank robbery trial

Following a four-day trial in federal court, a jury Friday convicted Deon Frederick Smith in the September 2011 armed robbery of a U.S. Bank branch on North Durango Road.

Smith and his co-defendant, Eric Tyrone Jackson, were accused of taking $5,439 in the robbery at gunpoint.

Jackson pleaded guilty and was sentenced last May to more than eight years in prison.

Smith, who is in federal custody, was convicted of all four counts in a superseding indictment — conspiracy, armed robbery, using and carrying a firearm and accessory after the fact.

He is to be sentenced May 15 before Chief U.S. District Judge Gloria Navarro.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Andrew Duncan and Kathryn Newman.
