Rose oil topic of Cooperative Extension, Rose Society meeting
Rose oil production and distillation will be the topic of the South Valley Rose Society and University of Nevada Cooperative Extension’s joint October meeting.
Bob Morris, a professor emeritus at the University of Nevada and garden columnist for the Las Vegas Review-Journal, will be the guest speaker at the 7 p.m. Oct. 24 session. It is free and open to the public.
Among the topics to be discussed are what products use rose oil as their base, what types of roses produce oil, how is the oil extracted and types of distillers.

Annual Desert Green event expands offerings
The annual Desert Green conference co-sponsored by University of Nevada Cooperative Extension has a new date and location for its 2013 session.
The conference, scheduled for Nov. 14 and 15 will beat the Springs Preserve. The two-day event, Sustainability in the Landscape, will have five concurrent seminar tracks, displays and a green industry mixer. Keynote speaker Mary Irish is a prolific author on arid horticulture and is known for her witty, engaging presentations.
Also new this year is a certified arborist exam preparation course, with the exam scheduled for Nov. 16. Also, an advanced arboriculture track will be offered. In all, the conference offers 14 continuing education units for certified arborists.
In addition, there will be tracks on pest management, landscape architecture, irrigation and water conservation and golf and sports turf management.
