Water Cooler: Pop culture fun, June 23

Here are a few tidbits from pop culture that caught our eye last week.

■ TV ratings for Game 5 of the NBA Finals whoop handily the Miss USA telecast from Planet Hollywood Resort in Las Vegas. Not sure what this says about American maledom — and on Father’s Day, yet! — but it can’t be good.

■ Celebrity watchers posit that John Mayer’s ■ new song “Paper Doll” is a response to ex-girlfriend Taylor Swift, who dissed Mayer in her own song “Dear John.” Could you two work this out in study hall so we can all just move on already?

■ “American Idiot,” an edgy musical based on the music of Green Day, plays The Smith Center for the Performing Arts. Coming later this season, the equally edgy “The Captain & Tennille: Muskrat What Now?”
