Allegiant Travel Co.’s growth slows as schedule pared down

Allegiant Travel Co.'s growth slowed in July as it tightened its flying schedule.

During the month, the company's Allegiant Air unit carried 703,000 passengers, a 4.4 percent gain compared with July 2011. At the same time, the number of miles each seat flew with a passenger in it rose 7.1 percent, even as the number of flights dropped 0.9 percent.

The load factor, an airline term for occupancy rate, declined 0.6 points, to 90.7 percent.

The numbers include both scheduled service, by far the largest source of revenue, and charters.

The month marked a slowdown from earlier this year. During the second quarter, for example, the passenger count went up 15.1 percent and the number of flights rose 10.8 percent.

Growth will pick up during the balance of the year, according to current projections, not only by adding flights but going longer distances, particularly the recently inaugurated service to Hawaii.
